TOLEDO- Fremont Ross was on the edge of getting into the state ratings but two straight one-run losses has the Little Giants outside looking in.
Fremont, which lost a 6-0 lead in falling to Findlay 7-6 on Tuesday, suffered a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Clay in a Three Rivers Athletic Conference game at Fifth Third Field on Wednesday.
Ross Achter, a University of Toledo commit, broke a 3-3 tie with a two-out RBI single in the top of the 7th and Jordan Grosjean closed the door in the bottom of the inning for a complete game.
Grosjean, a 6-3 junior who has verbally committed to Central Michigan, allowed 8 hits, with all 3 Fremont Ross runs unearned. The right-hander, who wears size 16 shoes, topped out at 89, throwing his fastball consistently in the mid-80s.
Tyler Wolf, a junior, also went the distance in a losing cause, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks while fanning 4. Wolf's fastball reached 86, consistently between 80-83.
Wolf was the top hitter on the day going 3-for-4 in leading Fremont Ross (9-5), which fell to 0-2 in the inaugural season of the TRAC. Trent Stout added a pair of hits.
Bryce McConnell had two singles for Clay, including a base hit in a two-run sixth which tied the game at 3-3. Grosjean had pulled the Eagles within one with a RBI single earlier in the frame.
Fremont had gone in front in the fifth, breaking a 1-1 deadlock with two runs. Wolf led off with a single followed by an error, sacrifice and intentional walk. Another error plated one run and a sacrifice fly made it 3-1.
Clay (3-6), now 2-0 in the TRAC, hosts No. 28 Findlay on Friday while Fremont Ross is home to take on Toledo Central Catholic.
