PBR Spotlight Game: Ontario Yankees 16u vs Ontario Diamonbacks 16u
PICKERING- Saturday morning brought sunshine for a doubleheader between the Ontario Yankees 16U and Ontario Diamondbacks 16U at Kirkey Field. The teams split the doubleheader 2-1 (Diamondbacks) and 10-0 (Yankees).
Game one saw the Diamondbacks jump on the board in the 1st. Catcher Lucas Gordon reached base on an error and later scored on big 6-foot-4 Brian MacCormack’s RBI single to left-centre field for a 1-0 lead.
In the Dbacks 4th, MacCormack lead off with his second single of the game then came around to score off of infielder Tyler Lawrence’s RBI single to right and 2-0 lead.
Dbacks’ right-hander Eric Cerantola went the distance for the complete game in a remarkable outing allowing only two hits, while striking out 11. He showed good life on his fastball and was painting both sides of the plate with a sharp curveball that hitters had a tough time picking up as four of the 11 strikeouts were looking. After leading off the game with a walk, Cerantola settled into a groove and retired 11 batters in a row. The lone run allowed was unearned in the 6th inning.
Yankees big left-hander Andrew Corby also pitched a complete game allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out four. He pitched out of a couple of jams in the 1st and 4th innings keeping his team in the game.
Game two saw the Yankees bats wake up and give starter Liam Miller-North a lot of run support. Liam Nelson lead the charge for the offence going 3-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI, including a two-run single as part of a bat around, five-run 5th for the Yankees.
Miller-North finished what he started, throwing a complete game two-hit shutout for the victory while striking out 12. He did a good job mixing his pitches and commanded his fastball hitting the corners and elevating it to show his opponents a different look.
Diamondbacks’ left-handed starter Braedan Athanasion went four innings allowing six runs on four hits, while striking out two.
