PBR Spotlight Game: Ontario Blue Jays 17u vs Ontario Royals 18u
BURLINGTON- 17U Ontario Blue Jays (OBJ) took on the 18U Ontario Royals last night in PBLO play for a game under the lights at Millcroft Park. The game was back and forth all night long as OBJ and the Royals always seemed to have an answer for each other’s offensive output.
The Ontario Blue Jays started RHP Kyle Symington who was pitching strong until the third inning when he had to be taken out after he left with what appeared to be a tightness in his back.
The Ontario Royals countered with 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-hander out of New Zealand, Matt Boyce. He is one of two new additions to the Royals pitching staff. Boyce is a big body whose fastball showed some life as he topped out at 84 mph while showing the ability to command his curveball. Boyce went six innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out three.
The offence started to come in the bottom of 4th when OBJ was able to push across three runs on a combination of hit batters, some timely Blue Jay hits and a few errors by the Royals in the infield.
OBJ then would add another in the fifth inning after Matt Carscadden got hit by a pitch with 2 outs. The big bodied, free swinging Cooper Lamb came to plate and hit a big double to left field to score Carscadden. Off the bat this ball looked like it would leave the park but strong winds kept it to a double.
The Ontario Royals began to claw back in the 6th when they put up 3 runs.
Joey Stipec came up with the bases loaded and drove in two with a strong at-bat that saw him fight a two strike double down the line. The Royals would score one more that inning while leaving two runners stranded.
The offense for the Royals was led my Stipec and Cochise College commit, Canice Ejoh. Canice made hard contact on four of his five at bats. A strong kid at 5-foot-11, 200-pounds who showed the ability to handle off speed. He finished yesterday 3-5 with a run scored.
In the end the Royals couldn’t muster enough late as they came up short 5-4. Brayden MacRae came in relief and worked 2.2 innings to pick up the win for the 17u Ontario Blue Jays.
