PBR Spotlight Game: North Toronto A's 18u vs East York Bulldogs 18u
MISSISSAUGA- Saturday was day two of the inaugural Midget Elite League Showcase Tournament that saw the North Toronto A’s 18U face the East York Bulldogs 18U at River Grove Park. The Bulldogs came away with the 5-4 victory.
The A’s got on the board in the first sending six batters to the plate and a 1-0 lead thanks to 3B/RHP Adrian Monk’s RBI single to leftfield.
In the Bulldog’s second, centerfielder Ben Guyatt showed some opposite field power with a leadoff home run to leftfield to tie the game 1-1. But that did not last long.
North Toronto responded right away with a run on the second thanks to a leadoff double by shortstop Hanwen Lu and scored on a sacrifice fly. Then in the third they would add two more runs starting with a one-out single by Monk who later scored on a wild pitch and the A’s were ahead 4-1.
After adding a run in the fourth to cut the deficit in half, the Bulldogs right-hand pitcher Chris Mance came into relief and shut down the A’s offence by posting four scoreless innings and giving his team a chance to climb back into the game. Coming off an emotional game before with their walk-off win against Mississauga, they found some more seventh inning magic.
Catcher/Outfielder Matt Wilkins led-off with a walk and advanced to second on a slow roller to the pitcher. Infielder Evan Neff followed with an RBI single and the Bulldogs were down 4-3. One more came around to score on a couple of errors and infielder Luke Gazmin played the hero for the second straight game with what proved to be the game-winning RBI single to right field as Mance struck out the side in the bottom half.
Mance went four innings allowing no runs on one hit, while striking out six and picked up the win.
The A’s right-hand pitcher Rhys Campbell took the loss after one-third of an inning allowing two runs on 2 hits.
