GROVE CITY, OHIO - The Grove City Greyhounds Josh Schaffer shuts down the talented Gahanna Lincoln Lions, securing a 2-1 victory.
In the top of the first, the Lions clean up hitter Peyton Ross stepped up to the plate and smoked a line drive into right field, driving in unsigned senior Christian Chiero who singled earlier in the inning.
Grove City's Schaffer ran into trouble after walking the next two hitters to load the bases. But, the talented underclassmen escaped the jam with a crucial strikeout to end the inning.
Gahanna Lions sophomore right-handed pitcher Mason Daniels got off to a great start retiring the side in the first two innings.
In the third, the Greyhounds were able to manufacture a run when junior Ben Myers drove a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Peyton Bowyer.
The score was deadlocked at 1-1 going into the fifth.
In the bottom of the inning, Myers came to the plate with another RBI opportunity with Dominic Cooper on third base. Looking for a way to manufacture a run in a pitching dominated game, Coach Alexander City signaled for a safety squeeze in an attempt to score the go ahead run. Not only Myers execute the bunt, delivering the go ahead run, but his perfectly placed bunt allowed him to reach safely on the play.
With the lead now 2-1 in favor of Grove City in the 7th, the Greyhounds handed the ball over to veteran southpaw Kyle Bennett, who recorded the save giving the Greyhounds a much needed conference win.
