PBR Scout Day: The Performance Academy - Infielder Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

Prep Baseball Report was on hand early last week to take in The Performance Academy Scout Day.  Close to 50 players ran through a modified pro-style workout that included a laser timed 60, defensive workout, offensive evaluation, and controlled bullpens for pitchers.

The Performance Academy (TPA) runs several teams at the high school age levels, based out of Raleigh, NC.  Players are given a unique opportunity in the TPA system to collect measurables and train to continue to better their baseball performance and overall athletic prowess.

The PBR Scout Day took place at the beautiful Ting Stadium in Holly Springs, NC.  Ting Stadium is home to Wake Tech CC in the spring and the Holly Springs Salamanders, of the Coastal Plains League, in the summer.  TPA is able to use Ting Stadium throughout the summer to train for on field execution, as well as improving overall athleticism of their players.

We will dive into the analysis of six infielders from the workout. Their graduating years range from 2019 - 2021 with several working with good rhythm and solid actions, projecting to be able to stay on the infield as they progress. Five of the six ran a sub 7.20 sixty, with four hovering in the 7.00 range. Several also showed a feel for the barrel.

The Performance Academy - Infielders

Micah Clark SS / RHP / (Homeschool) Coram Deo Academy, NC / 2019

Average frame with an athletic build at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds.  Ran a 7.00 sixty. Right handed hitter is balanced, using a toe tap to set his weight.  Short stride, setting for some uphill leverage with average bat speed and an exit velocity of 82 mph off the barrel.  Pull oriented in BP. Barrel awareness may improve as he learns where the bat head loads to on the toe tap as the lagged position could differ pitch to pitch.  Soft hands and fluid, rhythmic feet as he worked to play through balls. Clean exchange with a loose, high-¾ release. Works to stay low through plays and has the ability to throw from various slots and angles.  Shows accuracy and average carry on throws peaking at 72 mph across the diamond.

David Dilday 3B / RHP / Apex Friendship, NC / 2021

Average 5-foot-1, 175 pound frame with some strength present.  Right handed hitter is balanced and athletic in his setup. Loads down with the hands.  Leg kick and aggressive stride. Vertical bat creates above average bat speed, working for extension.  Level with occasional uphill leverage, staying gap-to-gap with a slight pull emphasis. Exit velocity peaked at 78 mph off the barrel.  Good rhythm between the feet and hands on the infield. Hands present late, but catch the ball with some softness, funneling to the midsection.  Easy, clean transfer to a medium arm swing and high-¾ release. Shows easy carry, pacing his arm at 70 mph across the diamond with some feel for accuracy.  Ran a 7.49 sixty.

Reece Landmark 1B / OF / Fuquay-Varina , NC / 2020

Lanky, high waisted 6-foot-3, 165 pounds.  Plenty of room to add strength as he continues to mature.  Quickness exists in the body, running a 7.07 sixty. Right handed hitter is tall and open in his setup, using a long stride.  Level, slightly uphill at times, working to get extension and hooking balls at times. Average bat speed and barrel ability with occasional length in the swing.  Defensively, plays high through the hips, working to find rhythm in the feet and hands. Some stiffness working to the exchange. Long feet and short arm stroke to a high-¾ slot.  Shows accuracy with some carry at 68 mph out of the hand.

Connor Mangum SS / 2B / Harnett Central , NC / 2020

Thin, 6-foot, 154 pound frame.  Plenty of room for projection and strength.  Athleticism and quickness exist, running a 6.84 sixty.  On the infield, plays with an ease in his hands and feet.  Soft catch and exchange as the feet are constantly in the right spot, working to gain ground as the loose arm arc gets to a ¾ release.  Has the ability to change the slot based on his movement, preserving accuracy. Carry exists with the positional velocity peaking at 65 across the diamond as he never just cut it loose.  Switch hitter with better barrel speed and awareness from the right side. On the right side, loose with a small stride and vertical bat. Direct bat path, working the gaps. Bat drags, sweeping the zone from the left side with more pull emphasis.  Exit velocity peaked at 78 mph from the right side.

Will Marcy SS / OF / Cardinal Gibbons, NC / 2021

Thin frame with some length in a 6-foot-1, 145 pound build.  Quickness exists, already running a 7.01 sixty. Lots of maturation ahead.  Right handed hitter is loose and balanced. Uses a toe tap to load, working to a small stride.  Vertical bat and high hands. Works level through the zone, some length, with average to above barrel awareness.  Fluid throughout and an exit velocity of 80 mph. Fluid, working to play through balls on the infield. Long arm action and high-¾ release showing accuracy on balls measured at 77 mph across the diamond.  Potential to have a high ceiling as he continues to mature.

Richie Van Tassel SS / RHP / Cardinal Gibbons , NC / 2020

Length is present in a 6-foot-1, 165 pound frame.  Will add strength as he matures. Ran a 7.14 sixty and should see that number improve with strength.  Clean actions at shortstop. Soft hands and good rhythm with his feet. Hips tend to stay high through the catch.  Clean exchanges, with some quickness, transition to a short, ¾ slot. Cuts the extension off at times on the throw but is accurate with throws peaking at 81 across the diamond.  Right handed hitter works tall, loading back, using a short stride. Loose, stays in the middle of the field. Level, wants extension. Exit velocity of 71 mph off the barrel.
On the bump the fastball worked 76-78 with a feel for location to his arm side.  Occasionally cut the fastball to his glove side. Change-up has slight arm side run at 72.  Some deception in the change as the hand speed mimics that of fastball. Breaking ball has gradual 12/6 tilt at 68-69, missing down on his line throughout the pen.  Works with some ease. Level and on-line, the front side can get high, creating possible deception. Long arm swing, reaching away from the body, getting to a high-¾ slot.  Tall through balance, seems to repeat the delivery.
