PBR Scout Day: Shelby American Legion: Pitchers & Catchers

Slender, lanky frame in the 6-foot-4, 160 pounder.  Fastball worked up to 84, sitting 81-83 with a feel for the strike zone.  High-¾ slot with a long arm swing, working behind the body line a little.  Good balance and average effort showing some feel for his rhythm.  Shoulders close down the line a little, staying level, finishing on line with a toe position that is slightly closed.  Two different breaking balls with the curveball showing better tilt than the slider.  Curveball sat 67-69 with gradual downer action, in the zone, with near fastball hand speed.  Change up ranged 70-73, slowing the arm some, throwing strikes with it.

In the box, left-handed hitter works from a balanced stance, loading back, using a short stride.  Works level, wanting extension, showing good head discipline and looseness with the swing.  Pull tendency.  Barrel position floats at times into the launch position, limiting some of the barrel ability.  Athletic behind the plate throwing 2.21-2.39 with a velo of 73 from the crouch.  Short arm swing to an over-the-top slot.  Fluid feet, clean exchanges, and accurate with average carry.  Received well, with average hands, presenting an easy target to throw to.  Blocks moving forward at times, but works for his pitchers.  Ran a 7.54 sixty.

An over-the-top slot with a short arm action worked 79-81, throwing strikes with all three pitches.  Fastball worked straight but showed feel to both sides of the plate.  Slight coil at balance, the shoulders work back on-line, staying level.  Curveball has a short, quick action,  When bigger, you can see a 10/4 arc.  The shorter curveball is late ranging 68-72.  Change up is the third pitch, slowing the arm to create arm side run at 67-71.  Ran a 7.43 sixty.

Arm has carry from the OF, touching 83 with carry and accuracy.  Short arm swing works to an over-the-top slot.  Fluid, playing through the ball with clean exchanges that were prolonged to set the feet and load the arm.   Right handed hitter starts athletic, using a short stride.  Works for extension.  Heavy pull tendency.  Bat waggle through the load sets the launch point from different positions.  Some strength in the body.  Produced an exit velocity of 81 mph.

6-foot, 180 pound righty works with some rhythm to a high-¾ slot from a long arm swing.  Fastball ranged 77-79, showing feel for the zone and command to the arm side.  Good feel for the breaking ball and changeup, with an ability to work backwards when he chooses.  Change sat 71-73, straight, with deception out of the hand.  The breaking ball has late downer action, short tilt at 66-68.  From balance, early hand separation and closing the line through the shoulders.  Works level, landing on-line with some rotation in the upper half.  

Caught the ball with a funnel to the midsection to a long arm swing and high-¾ slot.  Some accuracy on throws topping at 81 across the diamond.  Fluid through the catch, there is some effort as the arm works to release.  Offensively, balanced and athletic to start.  Smooth load back, almost barring the front arm.  Short stride.  Wants extension, at times getting long from the launch point.  Pull conscious with fluid rhythm.  Some quickness in the swing.  Exit velocity topped at 80 off the barrel.  Ran a 7.64 sixty

Wingate commit.  Athletic behind the dish, wanting to help and communicate with his pitchers.  Arm strength has carry and accuracy with pop times ranging 1.99-2.06 with a positional velocity of 77 mph from the crouch.  Quick feet with quick, clean exchanges. Short arm path to an over-the-top slot.  Offensively, the 6-foot-1, 180 pounder works balanced and athletic, loading back and using a short stride.  Simple, loose, and direct with the bat head.  Has aggression.  Exit velocity topped at 84 mph.  Better than average bat speed.  Works level, wants extension, and has a pull tendency.  

Fastball ranged 82-84 from an over-the-top slot.  Quick arm works with a short arm swing.  Level shoulders, slightly closed at balance and landing slightly closed.  Breaking ball uses near fastball hand speed to create a sharp 10/4 action at 68-70.  Change up sat 75-76 with slight arm side run.  Threw all three for strikes, lacking premium command of any.

6-foot-4, 190 pound lefty with good rhythm to balance.  Glove point from the front side and long limbs create some effort and distraction.  Fastball ranged 77-79, erratic early and settling into the zone as the bullpen aged.  Two different breaking balls with a  big curveball, showing deception out of the hand at 63-65.  Slider worked with occasional late tilt at 72-73.  Both breaking pitches were left arm side at times but showed better feel for the strike zone vs. the fastball. Changeup has fade and deception out of the hand at 68-72.  Down out of the zone, the misses were consistent.  Live arm with good spin on the baseball.  Command should come with reps.

Offensively, athletic and swings it.  Loads back, using a short stride to get to better than average bat speed.  Level path produces line drives, working gap-to-gap with an exit velocity of 85 mph.  Some coil in the load and can get around balls at times, with a heavy pull emphasis.  Caught the ball on the infield, with rhythm in the feet and clean exchanges.  Long arm action works to a high-¾ slot showing carry with a positional velocity of 72mph.  Ran a 7.84 sixty.
