On Saturday June 3rd, the On The Korner Saints held their PBR Scout Day at Gaston Christian School.  The players in attendance went through a full pro-style workout, running a 60, being evaluated on defense, and on offense.  Pitchers threw extended bullpens for their evluations.  Each player received a complete PBR profile, including up to date statistics, an evaluation, and a video.

On the Korner, also referred to as OTK, is a North Carolina program based out of the Gastonia region.  Players are able to work out at the OTK Performance Facility and the program has several teams stretch across different age brackets.

Over the coming days, we will be looking at several positional groups, profiling each player in attendance.  Today we take a look at the Infielders.

PBR Scout Day - OTK Infielders

Brandon Baucom 2B / SS / Highland School of Technology, NC / 2019

Active feet and caught the ball with ease.  Average hands and clean exchanges stood out for the 5-foot-3, 110 pounder.  Young frame with plenty of maturing ahead.  Sixty time measured 7.85.  Loads the arm after the exchange with long shuffles and a long arm swing, turning the ball early to an over-the-top slot.  Head works off line through the release, causing some effort, with positional velocity measuring 74 mph across the diamond.  A left-handed hitter, works from a tall base and open.  Simple setup and swing, very repeatable.  Good head discipline.  Average stride works to a level swing.  Line drives stay gap-to-gap.  Fluid rhythm, rotational on the back side, average bat speed.  Exit velocity topped at 72 mph.

Right handed pitcher worked 68-72 with his fastball, showing some run.  Change-up is ahead of the curveball, ranging 67-69 with feel and arm side action.  Gets around the breaking ball, 63-65, creating an erratic sweeping action.  In the wind-up the front side clears early with the head causing some effort.  Line is much more closed and simple in the stretch.

Alexander Coffey 1B / RHP / South Point, NC / 2019

Long limbs on the 6-foot-2, 160 pound left-handed hitter.  Works open and tall, with a short stride.  Good feel for the barrel, exit velocity topped at 77 mph.  Stayed gap-to-gap with a level stroke, producing occasional uphill leverage.  Showed average hands around the bag with a long arm action to an over-the-top slot.  Positional velocity topped at 65 mph with accuracy on a number of different types of throws.  Tends to catch the ball deep, lacking some rhythm in the feet, then funneling to the mid-section for clean exchanges.  Ran a 8.03 sixty.

On the mound the fastball ranged 67-68 with occasional run.  The change-up would flash early fade at 68-61, slowing the arm.  The curveball works with early, gradual 10/4 tilt, slowing the arm and topping at 60.

Jake England RHP / 3B / Forestview, NC / 2019

Primary pitcher, worked out as a position player only.  6-foot-3, 170 pound right hander works from a balanced position with a slight crouch.  Leg kick creates a weight shift load, while the barrel works from a vertical launch position, with waggle.  Works with looseness and wants extension.  Average bat speed.  Level through the zone.  At times thin through the baseball as the bat head would launch from different positions out of the waggle.  When on the barrel, showed strength with an exit velo of 85 mph.  On the infield, the feet have some rhythm and athleticism.  Hands tend to stab at times, presenting late, but clean exchanges lead to a high-¾ slot with average carry and good accuracy.  Arm reached 78 across the diamond.  Foot speed can improve, sixty measured at 7.91.

Jackson Finger SS / 2B / North Gaston, NC / 2020

Some projection in the thin 5-foot-10, 146 pounder.  Active feet, soft hands and the ability to catch the baseball stood out.  Fluid, funneling to the midsection with a quick, clean exchange.  Athletic actions.  Short arm swing to a high-¾ slot with above average accuracy and some carry.  Arm speed topped at 77 across the infield.  Offensively, right-handed hitter, starts from a balanced, crouched position.  Weight shift load to a short stride, landing heavy on the front foot, keeping the barrel flat at the launch position.  Athletic swing with good head discipline.  Level, looking for extension, working gap-to-gap with good rhythm.  Showed some strength for the age with an exit velocity of 81 mph.  Ran a 7.49 sixty.

Wesley Hall 2B / OF / Stuart Cramer, NC / 2018

5-foot-4, 140 pound infielder plays with more strength than his size suggests.  Exit velocity topped at 82 mph off the barrel and showed average carry on throws across the infield at 81 mph.  Catches the ball and is very accurate with his throws.  Average hands, but active feet, lead to clean, low exchanges.  At times playing high.  Long arm swing to a high-¾ slot.  Right-handed hitter works open from a tall stance.  Good rhythm and handsy swing.  Aggressive with a good feel for the barrel.  Aggressive stride and good backside work to get average bat speed.  Wants extension, working gap-to-gap.  Ran a 7.57 sixty.

Joseph Palmer SS / RHP / Ashbrook, NC / 2018

6-foot-2, 160 pound lanky frame.  Caught the ball consistently.  Average hands worked, while high through the core at times.  Long arm action to a high-¾ slot showed accuracy and carry, measuring 81 mph across the diamond.  Right handed hitter ran a 7.47 sixty and produced an exit velocity of 83 mph off the barrel.  Crouched, loads back with a weight shift into a short stride.  Barrel loads to a vertical position.  Some pull tendency in a swing that can drag through the zone level, staying gap-to-gap.

On the mound, the fastball plays heavy at 80-83 with hard run when down in the zone.  Was elevated in the zone at times, but showed a feel for throwing strikes.  Slows the arm on change-up producing 71-73 run and cut action.  Breaking ball ranged 67-69 with gradual 11/5 arc, fighting to create spin and lacking extension at times.  Tall and closed at balance, with some coil in the upper half, lacks some extension while fighting to get back on line.  Works from a high-¾ slot with quickness in the arm.  Long arm swing is loose, working behind the body line, creating some effort to get back on line.

Parker Rhyne SS / C / Gaston Day School, NC / 2019

5-foot-7, 160 pounder.  Works very direct to all ground balls, catching the ball deep, but showing quick, clean exchanges as he funnels to the midsection.  Arm tested at 74 mph across the infield from a long arm action to an over-the-top slot.  Erratic at times.  Ran a 7.90 sixty.  Right-handed hitter starts open and crouched loading the bat head to a slight wrap.  Average stride.  Aggressive.  Works level with extension, staying gap-to-gap.  Exit velocity topped at 77 mph.

Fastball seemed to play heavy at 74-76.  Change-up has good deception with arm side run at 64-67.  Breaking ball touched 67 with late downer action.  Some effort as the arm works long to an over-the-top slot.  Glove points down the line and the front side clears the line.  Showed feel for the strike zone with fastball and change.  In the stretch, sets up with the line closed through the shoulders.
