PBR Player of the Year Announced

PBR Staff

Earlier this week, Prep Baseball Report announced the PBR State Player of the Year awards and First Team All-PBR. From the 2019 list of 42 individual PBR State POY awards, we have selected one athlete who has excelled amongst his peers, on his way to earning the third ever Prep Baseball Report Player of the Year Award:

Brett Baty

Baty, a third baseman and right-handed pitcher from Lake Travis High School in Texas, put together one of the best seasons in recent memory while leading his team to the 6A state semi-finals.

As one of the top prospects in the country, Baty was no secret to opposing pitchers, but pitching around him simply didn’t work. The Texas recruit hit a staggering .602/.737/1.306 in 98 at-bats with six doubles, three triples and 19 home runs. He drove in 50 runs and scored 59 of his own. He also walked 49 times while striking out just nine. Baty was drafted 12th overall by the New York Mets and signed for $3.9 million. While his future is clearly as a powerful left-handed bat, Baty also contributed on the mound and had to step up when his teammate and the 78th overall pick, RHP Jimmy Lewis, missed his last few starts. Baty went 6-1 with a 0.92 ERA and three saves across 17 appearances. He logged 53 innings, struck out 96, walked 20 and allowed 29 hits.

The previous winners of the Prep Baseball Report Player of the Year award include 2017 LHP MacKenzie Gore (Whiteville HS, NC) and 2018 RHP Mason Englert (Forney HS, TX). The Prep Baseball Report staff has been diligently scouting and covering games at diamonds across the country this spring to bring parents, athletes and fans the most comprehensive coverage of amateur baseball. Their dedication and coverage allows PBR a credible way to identify the top athletes each year who best represent the game of baseball.
