St. Rita senior left-handed pitcher Steven Washilewski has been named this week’s PBR Illinois Player of the Week thanks to outstanding performance on the mound and at the plate last week for the Mustangs.
Washilewski, a Kansas commit, started and got the win on the mound in Saturday’s regional championship 5-0 win over Lyons Township. The southpaw twirled a complete game shutout. In the seven innings of work he scattered three hits, struck out 10 and walked one.
Washilewski also helped himself out at the plate with a two-run double and three runs batted in.
Below is a scouting report from one of Washileski’s starts this spring:
4.22.17 - Kansas commit. 6-foot-1, 185-pound, athletically built, well-proportioned left-handed pitcher. Threw a complete game, seven inning shutout. Scattered seven hits, struck out six and did not walk anyone. Throws a high volume of strikes, goes right after the hitter, constantly on the attack and works fast. Athletic delivery, repeats well, stays online and has rhythm throughout. Loose, clean arm action, gets out front. Fastball, thrown for strikes, commands it well in the zone at times, works mostly straight, not afraid to go in, sat 83-86 mph, touched 87. Slider is his go-to pitch, throws it aggressively, sharp spin, late action, throws it for strikes and can back foot right-handed hitters with it; sat 73-75 mph. Changeup, threw a handful throughout the start, maintains fastball arm speed, works down in the zone, 79 mph.
For his efforts, Washilewski has been named the PBR Player of the Week for the week of May 21 - May 28.
Stay tuned for our Weekly Diamond Notes, this Friday, as there were players who narrowly missed out on the Player of the Week award.
