PBR IA COMMITMENT SPOTLIGHT
PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?
DERMODY: I chose Iowa Central because I felt like it was a place that I really could succeed and really get better as a pitcher. I also felt like the Coaches were invested in me and could give me the best chance to get better.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
DERMODY: Kirkwood was the other school that was in real consideration.
PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?
DERMODY: Coach Stein saw me pitch against Kuemper Catholic and saw me pitch at the PBR event early August at Mount Mercy. Coach and I started texting each other early September and I had a great phone call with him around that time as well, which I think was when I really started to like the idea of going to Iowa Central. I then went on a visit to Iowa Central and I met Coach Stein and Coach Flattery and I think that's where my relationship with the coaches really grew because I felt like they were invested in me trying to get better and that they could help me the most.
PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
DERMODY: Yeah, I definitely feel relieved but I'm also very grateful for all the coaches that took the time to recruit me and took the time to check in on me.
PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
DERMODY: There are many reasons why I chose Iowa Central but a really big factor was that they have seen me pitch twice before they started recruiting me, so they knew what I was as a pitcher. They also continued to check-in on me and ask how I was doing which made me feel like they cared.
PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
DERMODY: My dad has definitely been my biggest help when it comes to baseball. He was my coach on all my youth teams and he's always been there to help me with my mechanics on pitching, hitting, fielding, or on any other part of the game I needed help on. He's also been a big help in the recruiting process by researching the schools that recruited me and talking to me about it. I wouldn't be where I am today without his help and support. I also can't thank my mom and brother enough as they have also supported me throughout my baseball career thus far.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
DERMODY: The recruiting process wasn't a crazy surprise to me but it always kept me on my toes. I was always making sure I was double checking what I said and trying to be as polite as possible.
PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
DERMODY: I haven't really gotten into that with them yet but I know I will be lifting and throwing a lot which I can't wait for.
PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
My favorite baseball moment was actually just last year. I started the game on the mound and before the game started I felt really good and was really loose. I pitched probably one of the best games I've ever, and I pitched a no-hitter through 6 innings before I had to be taken out because of pitch count. Then one of my best friends went into to close the last inning and struck-out the side, so we combined for a no-hitter. It was also my high school coach's 900th win all-time, putting him in the top 10 for most winningest coaches all-tie in Iowa.
PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
I didn't pitch against him but I played against Peyton Williams who I think went 4-4 with 2 HR's and 2 doubles.
