PBR Future Games: Team Wisconsin Game One Recap

Team Wisconsin jumped out to a strong start in the 2021 Future Games, taking down Team Iowa-Minnesota-Nebraska, 10-4, at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, the first day of game play. 

Wisconsin jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, thanks to an RBI double from C Dominic Kibler (New Berlin West, 2023). Kibler would end the day with two knocks, both working on the barrel, and he walked twice as well. After a strong showing in BP on Wednesday, the left-handed hitting Kibler is amongst the biggest winners of the week thus far. 

OF/1B Caleb Karll (Madison West, 2023) finished the day with two RBIs, the first coming from a solo shot deep over the left-center fence to start the second inning. OF J.T. Kelenic (Catholic Memorial, 2023) also drove in two runs and INF Jack Counsell (Whitefish Bay, 2023) doubled, driving a run in later in the game on a sacrifice fly. 

INF Ethan Hindle (Arrowhead, 2023) earned Player of the Game honors after a strong all-around showing. Hindle went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and three barrels, swiping two bags as well. He showed well on the diamond at multiple infield positions, including shortstop, where his sure-handed actions and athleticism certainly looked the part. 

Both OF Ryan Drumm (Edgewood, 2023) and C Thomas Curry (Arrowhead, 2023) had strong showing offensively, and the box score does not tell the whole story of their days. Drumm found the barrel twice, both balls jumping off his bat in a hurry with the second finding its way into the left-center gap for a double. 

The same goes for Curry, who just missed a long fly out to center field in his second plate appearance of the day before belting a double into the left-center gap that left his barrel at 97 mph. 

Seven different arms toed the rubber for Team Wisconsin, with RHP Thomas Burns (Hortonville, 2023) starting things and tossing arguably the cleanest inning of them all. He retired the side in order, as the 6-foot-3, 180-pound Burns bumped his fastball as high as 90 mph and showed a feel to land his breaking ball for strikes, albeit used sparingly. 

RHP/SS Noah Dreier (Brookfield Central, 2023) showed well on the infield during Wednesday’s workout portion with smooth, savvy up-the-middle actions that can defend there at the next level. Wednesday, he hopped on the mound and looked the part as well, pumping his fastball at 83-85 mph on the corners. Dreier also utilized a low-70s breaking ball to keep hitters off balance, landing it for strikes or working it below the zone with natural downer action. 

RHP Chayce Osterhaus (Markesan, 2023) continues to build off the early momentum he started in the spring with the Hornets and strung together a strong inning yesterday for Team Wisconsin. The lean and wiry 6-foot, 155-pound Osterhaus sat exclusively at 87-88 mph with his fastball yesterday, averaging 18-plus inches of vertical break on each one and he retired the side, too. 

RHP Luke Agnew (Marquette University, 2023) is still fully polishing up his arsenal and operation on the mound, but the 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander showed well on Wednesday. Agnew bumped his fastball up to 88 mph, sitting 86-88 mph and mixing in a low-to-mid-70s changeup that flashed out-pitch potential, thrown at arm speed. His increase in velocity is a noteworthy takeaway from Wednesday as well.

Team Wisconsin will face up against Team Illinois at 10:15 a.m. on Friday morning.
