PA Underclass Games: Analyzing the Catchers

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia kicked into high gear over the past 10 days with the PA Top Prospect Games (June 17-18), Shenandoah Valley College Prospect Showcase (June 23) and the PA Underclass Games (June 24-25) offering college coaches a glimpse at some 175 prospects in a short period of time.

Over the course of the coming week we will analyze the prospects that performed by position. Today we take a look at the catchers that participated in the PA Underclass Games.

 

Catchers: PA Underclass Games


Top Prospect

Ryan HoganRyan Hogan (Wyoming Valley West), 2016

Hogan left little doubt as to why he was named to the Team Pennsylvania roster for the PA Top Prospect Games this summer. The multi-talented junior took home MVP honors for the white team and showcased the skills that have him currently ranked No. 17 in the PA Class of 2016.

Hogan put on a show during his batting practice round driving balls to and over the left field wall. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitter starts slightly open and utlizes loose hands and a strong lower half to create a 98 mph bat exit velocity. Hogan went 3-for-5 in game play, including a ground rule double that hopped over the wall at 385' in right center field.

Hogan is capable of playing all three outfield positions and 1B in addition to his primary defensive position behind the plate. He showcased a 92 mph arm from the outfield and pop times of 1.93-1.99 on throws of 82 mph from the crouch. Hogan flashed his athleticism by turning in the top 60-yard dash time of the event at 6.79.


Best of the Rest (alphabetical)

Michael Beimel (St. Marys), 2017

Beimel is a 5-foot-8, 140-pound right-handed hitter that displayed good rhythm to his swing from a square stance with a high hands load. He barreled the baseball routinely during batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 72 mph. Beimel showcased the ability to be on time to the baseball and the ability to use all fields in going 3-for-7 during game play. The sophomore flashed pop times of 2.27-2.35 on throws of 65 mph from the crouch while displaying solid receiving and blocking skills.

Nick Chroscinski (The Hill School), 2016

Chroscinski has a projectable frame at 6-foot-4, 185-pounds. The right-handed hitter utilizes a high hands load and a toe tap stride out of a square stance to produce a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Chroscinski barreled the baseball routinely during batting practice and drove a double to the 380' sign during game play displaying his power potential. The junior showcased pop times of 2.15-2.22 on throws of 73 mph from the crouch and showed athletic actions around the bag at 1B. His height and projection for future growth may mean a move from behind the plate is in his future.

Tim DiLoreto (Christopher Dock), 2016

DiLoreto is a 5-foot-9, 150-pound C/OF that showcased sound catch and throw skills with pop times of 2.06-2.15 on throws of 72 mph from the crouch. The right-handed hitter displayed a flat bat path and the ability to use all fields from a square stance during batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. DiLoreto 2-for-7 in game play and showed the athleticism needed to play multiple defensive positions.

Danny Doherty (New Hope-Solebury), 2017

Doherty showcased pop times of 2.12-2.20 on throws of 70 mph from the crouch. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound sophomore hits from a slightly open stance and demonstrated the ability to barrel the baseball consistently during batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. He has a projectable frame and showed sound catch and throw techniques behind the plate.

Dylan Everly (Episcopal Academy), 2017

Everly went 2-for-5 with a walk during game play, flashing a bat exit velocity of 79 mph. The left-handed hitter displayed a flat bat path and the ability to utilize all fields during a solid round of batting practice. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound sophomore displayed above average catch and throw skills with pop times of 2.09-2.18 on throws of 69 mph from the crouch.

James McConnon (The Haverford School), 2016

McConnon showed a very accurate throwing arm, repeatedly putting the ball on the bag with pop times of 2.12-2.21 on throws of 71 mph from the crouch. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound right-handed hitter made consistent solid contact in game play showed some gap power out of a square stance during his round of batting practice. McConnon displayed his athleticism around the bag at 1B and turned in a solid 7.21 60-yard dash time.

Hunter McGarvey (La Salle), 2018

McGarvey displayed a slightly open stance and a direct path to the baseball during a solid round of batting practice. The freshman right-handed hitter showed some opposite field power with a double to right field on day two and registered a 73 mph bat exit velocity. McConnon showcased pop times of 2.19-2.25 on throws of 71 mph from the crouch and should continue to improve as his 5-foot-8, 145-pound frame fills out.

Justin Smith (Warwick), 2016

Smith had a solid two days in all aspects of the game. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound left-handed hitter has a looseness to his swing that allows him to work through the baseball and use all fields equally well. Smith went 3-for-7 in game play while barreling several other baseball with a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. The junior is a sound receiver and registered pop times of 2.00-2.09 on throws of 72 mph from the crouch.
