PA Top Prospect Games: Grey Team Analysis

The Grey Team won both of their games played over two days at Bucknell University and had a number of prospects who turned in impressive performances. Following is a breakdown of the prospects who participated as part of the Gold Team at the 2013 PA Top Prospect Games.

OF/RHP Julian Cox, New Castle HS, Class of 2014

Cox showcased very raw athleticism and some tools that make him a very interesting follow. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound physical specimen made the defensive play of the event on a fully laid out diving catch in right center field and displayed a 90 mph arm during defensive evaluations. Cox hits out of a slightly open stance and has some deficiencies in his swing, but showed his potential in game play when he barreled a fastball on the outer half to the wall in right center field. Cox struggled with his control during his time on the mound sitting 80-83 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. He also displayed an 11/5 breaking curveball that sat 67-70 mph and a 68 mph changeup.

OF Tanner Forry, Dallastown Area HS, Class of 2014

Forry showed very well during defensive evaluations with athletic actions and good carry on throws of 90 mph. The 6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitter showcased a square stance and a flat bat path during a solid round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 90 mph. While he struggled a bit in game action going 0-for-7, he showed a big upside and raw athleticism that will make him a player to watch in this class.

Colin FrySS/3B Colin Fry, Manheim Central HS, Class of 2014

Fry is a solidly built 5-foot-11, 190-pound SS/3B that earned MVP honors for his team largely based on his defensive work at 3B. He made several diving plays in game action and showed his athleticism by scrambling to his feet to record outs with a solid 80 mph arm across the diamond. Fry hits out of a slightly open stance and stays behind the baseball well to create barrel whip and an 87 mph bat exit velocity. He went 2-for-7 at the plate with a triple during the course of the event.

RHP/1B Sam Lazowski, Donegal HS, Class of 2015

Lazowski continues to develop as he grows into his 6-foot-4, 205-pound frame. The left-handed hitter showed developing power from the left side in a solid round of batting practice with an 86 mph bat exit velocity. Lazowski showed real potential from the mound as well sitting 79-82 out of a high 3/4 arm slot during his time on the mound. He also commanded an 11/5 breaking curveball that sat 68-70 mph. Lazowski has a frame that suggests continual development as a pitcher and hitter over the coming years.

C/OF Kevin Mohollen, Strath Haven HS, Class of 2014

Mohollen was easily one of the most impressive prospects at the event. The 6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitter showcased a bat exit speed of 84 mph hitting out of a square stance. Mohollen gets to extension regularly and barreled the baseball from gap to gap. He went 1-for-7 with a double in game play but consistently squared the baseball and showcased his 6.70 60-yard dash speed in legging out the double. Mohollen displayed solid receiving and blocking skills with throws of 76 mph out of the crouch and pop times of 2.03-2.12.

3B/RHP Brett Morrison, Susquenita HS, Class of 2014

Morrison showcased a square stance and solid lower half in barreling the baseball repeatedly with a bat exit velocity of 84 mph during batting practice. He went 3-for-7 in game play, showing the ability to use all fields. Morrison displayed athletic actions at 3B with a an accurate 81 mph arm across the diamond. He sat 83-84 out of an over the top arm slot during his work on the mound. Morrison also showcased a 72 mph changeup and an 11/5 breaking curveball that sat 68-70 mph.

C/3B Christian Porterfield, West Middlesex HS, Class of 2014

Porterfield continued to show the offensive skill set that makes him one of the more coveted hitters in the PA Class of 2014. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitter barreled the baseball all over the field during batting practice and turned in the top bat exit velocity of the event at 96 mph. Porterfield went 4-for-7 with two doubles and five RBI during game play. He continues to show improvement behind the plate with pop times of 1.97-2.10 on throws of 76 mph out of the crouch. Porterfield showcased the ability to play 3B, 1B and the outfield as well during game play.

RHP C.J. Pruitt, Sun Valley HS, Class of 2015

Pruitt impressed as a potential two-way player at the next level. Working from a high 3/4 arm slot, Pruitt sat 83-85 with a three pitch assortment of complimentary pitches. His 11/5 breaking curveball sat 66-68, while he also commanded a 73 mph changeup and 70 mph knuckle ball. Pruitt also worked out defensively behind the plate showcasing pop times of 2.03-2.09 on throws of 72 mph out of the crouch.

2B/SS Ty Reginelli, Mars Area HS, Class of 2015

Reginelli is a left-handed hitter that hits from a square stance with excellent hand action to keep the bat head on plane through the hitting zone. Reginelli turned in a bat exit velocity of 81 mph and squared the baseball repeatedly to all fields during batting practice. The 5-foot-8, 145-pound middle infielder has an athletic frame and room for growth physically. He showcased soft hands and the ability to play through the baseball with throws of 78 mph across the diamond. Reginelli went 1-for-8 in game play at the plate, but showed a solid approach and the ability to be a quality hitter.

RHP Brandon Schlimm, Elk County Catholic HS, Class of 2014

Schlimm is a 6-foot-4, 175-pound RHP who made a name for himself with his performance on the mound. The long limbed righty sat 86-89 in three innings of work out of a high 3/4 arm slot. His fastball had good late life and some arm side run. Schlimm's arm action is clean and at times looks effortless. He also commanded the zone with a 67-69 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 69 mph changeup. Schlimm has plenty of room to fill out physically and could easily see additional velocity gains.

C/OF Brandyn Smith, Cedar Cliff HS, Class of 2014

Smith showcased an 87 mph bat exit velocity during a very solid round of batting practice. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter uses a leg lift trigger and a solid lower half to generate barrel whip and some gap power. Smith displayed the strongest catcher arm at the event at 79 mph out of the crouch with pop times of 2.00-2.09. He went 2-for-8 in game play during the course of the event.

2B/SS Ted Williams, Meadville HS, Class of 2014

The Millersville University recruit showcased soft hands, solid footwork and an 82 mph arm across the infield during infield workouts. Williams was involved in three double play turns during game action and showed the ability to handle both infield positions effectively. The left-handed hitter had one of the top in-game offensive performances of the event going 5-for-8 while barreling the baseball in the three at bats that he did not reach base safely.
