Ontario Spotlight Game: Ottawa 16U vs Ontario Terriers 16U - Doubleheader
Game 1:
Oakville – Ottawa-Nepean travelled West for a 4 game set against the Oakville Terriers this past weekend, with the first two games coming Saturday evening.
The first game saw a pitcher’s duel between 2018 uncommitted grad Matthew Foster of Ottawa-Nepean and 6-foot-2 lefty Campbell Ellis of the Terriers, a 2020 uncommitted grad.
Both pitchers got off to great starts by getting through the first inning with relatively little trouble. The Canadians struck first by hitting back to back doubles with two outs in the second with Dave Legault picked up the RBI.
Dante Wright of the Oakville Terriers was able to get that run back in the bottom of the third by singling home Mihai Aron after he had lead off the inning with a single and a stolen base.
In the fourth inning both pitchers had settled into a groove, however Nolan Struss of Ottawa-Nepean drilled a 2 out home run to right field that easily cleared the fence to put Ottawa on top 2-1 after five innings.
From there, the story was Ottawa-Nepean starter Foster, who allowed zero runs over the last four innings with only four base runners reaching base. He was able to work quick and attack the strike zone, while Terriers starter Ellis was right there with Foster throughout the day, but the one pitch to Struss turned out to be the difference in the ballgame.
Game 2:
Oakville – The Terriers and Canadians played the second game of their Saturday double header shortly after completing their first game. The offense for both sides woke up in Game 2, with a back and forth game that saw the Canadians hold on for a 6-5 win.
The Canadians got off to a fast start in Game 2, with their first two batters reaching base and eventually coming around to score after a couple wild pitches and some errant throws.
In the second inning, the Canadians were in position to add to their lead after a couple of defensive miscues put runners on 1st and 2nd, an infield fly was followed by a walk to load the bases for Nolan Struss. However, Struss flew out to right field, with the runner on 3rd getting doubled up trying to return to 3rd base.
In the top of the third, the Terriers took the lead after scoring two runs thanks to a couple of walks, a single and a big RBI double by Christian Bottero making the score 3-2. However, Ottawa-Nepean came right back in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs with the big blow being a two run double by Legault.
The Terriers closed the gap again in the top of the fourth, pushing a run across after a couple wild pitches.
Again, Ottawa re-established their two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth by also scoring after a couple of wild pitches. Both bullpens kept the two teams in check through the fifth and sixth innings, though Ottawa did threaten after a one out triple by Sebastian Dubois.
The Terriers threatened to tie the game in the top of the 7th after a leadoff single was brought home by a Matthew Ward triple to straight away center field. The Terriers loaded the bases after 2 walks, but a strikeout and a fly out to left field ended the game.
