Ontario Spotlight Game: OBJ 18U vs OBJ 17U
St Catherines – On a cloudy May night, Ontario Blue Jays 18U team took on their younger counterparts the Ontario Blue Jays 17U. The end result was that the big brother came out on top with the 18s holding off a late rally in the ninth to win 7-5.
2017 outfielder and Indian River commit Rashad Collymore had a perfect night at the plate, going 3-3 with a towering home run to deep right field as well as a couple base on balls. Jack Liddell, a Connors State commit who started for the 18s dominated through four shutout innings, allowing only 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 3. He showcased a good fastball and kept it low in the zone with a sharp breaking ball that resulted in a few of his strikeouts. Lucas Storm started for the 17s and went 2 scoreless, keeping hitter off balanced and throwing strikes.
The bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the costliest for the 17s. The elders scored five runs in the inning as Garrett Takamatsu was drilled by Jared Evans to lead off the inning and later scored on a deep double to left-centre by Florida Tech commit Jakob Newton. Newton proceeded to score after 2 wild pitches and a walk to George Farid was it for Evans as Ethan Seaver entered the ballgame. and threw the ball well in his two innings of work, giving up no hits and striking out 1.
The highlight of the game for the 17s was when 2018 uncommitted right-hander Diego Dominguez came into relief in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and nobody out. With the 18s already up 7-3, Dominguez proceeded to get a weak groundball to third base and then struck out the next 2 hitters to get out of the jam unscathed. In his second inning of work he went 3-up-3-down with a strikeout and a live fastball.
Offensively, the 17s were held relatively quiet through the first 8 innings of the game but began threatening in the top of the ninth when they loaded the bases on a triple by pinch hitter Austin Wilkie, 2 walks and an RBI single by 2018 infielder Ryan Johnston. OBJ 18U then brought in big right-hander and LS-Eunice commit Nate Holmes to close it out and he proceeded to strike out 2 and seal the win. The 17s rally fell short as the final was 7-5 for the 18s.
