Ontario Insider: Tournament 12 - Ontario Black vs Quebec
Rogers Centre: With only four teams left and three games to play on Monday, Ontario’s lone representative was Ontario Black, who qualified for semifinal action by going 3-1 in pool play with its only defeat coming to BC in a tight 4-3 affair.
Their semifinal match-up versus Quebec had all the fixings, with two of the top arms in the country with Noah Skirrow and Connor Angel scheduled to start.
The two right-handers matched zero’s through the first two innings, but a walk to Kurt Dawkins, followed by a Lucas Parente triple was able to give Ontario a 1-0 lead.
The lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth as Eduoard Julien made things happen, leading off with a double off Skirrow, stealing third and scoring on an errant overthrow. The second baseman is an exciting player who can produce runs with his legs on the base paths.
The tie game lasted an instant as Ontario came right back at Quebec, throwing up a four spot in the next half inning. Right in the middle was another triple by Parente for his second of the game. Base hits by Collymore, Noah Naylor, a triple by Adam Hall and a final RBI knock by Daniel Carinci made it 5-1 Ontario.
Quebec did not rest easy as they threatened with runners on and the bases loaded, but Ontario went to the bullpen and called for 2017 uncommitted righty Tyler Whalen. Whalen was able to escape the jam, giving up one hit and striking out three while working the fifth and sixth innings. 2017 grad Mitchell Stemerdink came in to work a scoreless seventh as Black was off to the final for a rematch with BC.
