Ontario Insider: T12 All-Ontario Team

With the 2017 Tournament 12 in the books, it’s time for us to highlight some Ontario players who had strong performances over the last 4 days and post our All-Ontario Team.

When picking this team, our staff took all games played into consideration, and while numbers play a part, their stat or slash line is not the only factor we account for. Some players put together strong performances defensively, had tough and quality at-bats but did not get rewarded in the scorebook, and some were on the wrong side of a defensive highlight.

All things equal, we take a look at what we believe is the All-Ontario Team from the past four days of games.

Catcher

Ian Jordan C / 3B / N/A, ON / 2018 Rankings  State Rank:28 POS:3 Jordan was an on-base machine, and had consecutive games where he did not record an official at-bat but did draw five straight walks at one point. The uncommitted 2018 grad was under control behind the plate and showed improved arm strength. Right-handed hitter who shows gap power and put good swings together all week.

Infielders

Tyrell Schofield-Sam 3B / OF / North Park , ON / 2019 Rankings  State Rank:10 POS:1 Schofield has improved in all facets of the game. Was outstanding defensively at third base, eating up everything hit his way while at the plate, he put together a tough at-bat every time he was up. The frame is stronger and has calmed down his leg kick which allows him to be more balanced at the dish. Lots of game from the 2019 uncommitted Schofield.

Noah Hull SS / OF / Sir Oliver Mowat, ON / 2019 Rankings  State Rank:23 POS:4 Hull had himself one of the better four days from a collective outlook of the entire T12. Was quiet and simple in the box, producing a lot of hard contact from the left side and was the hero in the battle of Ontario, roping a two-out, two RBI double in the 7th down right-field line to give Green a 4-3. Hull looked very mature offensively while he played a strong defensive game on the corners in the infield.

Noah Case 3B / RHP / Richview CI, ON / 2019 Rankings  State Rank:13 POS:2 Case has had himself quite a summer, always producing at the plate and this past week was no different. Game one saw him go 2-3 with 5 RBI’s including a bases clearing double in the top of the 7th to put the Futures ahead 6-4. Case had already tripled earlier and was a force in the batter’s box all week, putting good swings with bat speed on pitches with a fluid swing that stays in the zone, barreling balls out front.

Blake Buckle C / 1B / Craig Kielburger , ON / 2019 Rankings  State Rank:9 POS:2 Buckle was the only player to leave the Rogers Centre during gaem action this week, and he recently re-classified his grad year to become a 2019 grad. Buckle showed pull power and was strong to contact, taking aggressive swings and not getting cheated in the box from the left side. He hit balls hard and loved the approach he had every time up. Buckle finished with  a .333 average and a .954 OPS while seeing time at catcher, first base, and DH.

Outfielders

Noah London OF / Father Leo Austin Catholic, ON / 2018 Rankings  State Rank:30 POS:4 London was one of the most improved players we saw this weekend, and has a number of different tools to his game. A threat on the basepaths as soon as he was on, London makes a lot of contact with a short, simple, quiet swing and puts pressure on the defence with his speed and hustle. Defensively, London can play all three outfield and is only going to get bigger and physically stronger. Uncommitted 2018 grad with lots of upside.

Eric Martin OF / RHP / St. Mary's HS, ON / 2019 Rankings  State Rank:8 POS:2 Martin may not have had the slash line he wanted, but the big 6-foot-3 left-handed hitting outfielder was always a presence in the box and put good swings on pitches but was not rewarded. Good size and leverage to work with, Martin shows rhythm and looseness, and the 2019 grad looks to be a guy who will be one of the better hitters in his class. Played right-field, the arm works and is a better runner than one may think with sub 7.00 60-yard dash times.

Dasan Brown OF / SS / Abbey Park, ON / 2019 Rankings  State Rank:3 POS:1 Overall Rank:328 POS:54 Brown is an athletic outfielder who is an above average defender as he can play anywhere in the outfield and saw a lot of time in centre and right-field. There is some swing and miss to his game, but Brown did have a couple clutch hits and continued to bring an aggressive approach to the plate.

Pitchers

Thomas Murphy RHP / All Saints , ON / 2018 Rankings  State Rank:12 POS:6 The East Tennessee State commit worked four no-hit innings while walking one and striking out 6. The 6-foot-3 right-hander changed speeds well and threw his curveball for strikes. Fastball sat at 85 mph and was up to 87. Dominant outing for Murphy.

Lukas Barry RHP / OF / St Aloysius Gonzaga, ON / 2019 Rankings  State Rank:6 POS:1 Was typical Lukas Barry in his two outings. Worked quick, fastball, curveball, changeup for strikes. Worked up down, in and out. Low pitch count while the curveball had depth, natural fade on his changeup and the fastball sat 84-85. Athletic delivery from clean ¾ arm slot.

Eric Cerantola RHP / St.Trinite, ON / 2018 Rankings  State Rank:3 POS:1 Overall Rank:181 POS:76 Overmatched his counterparts from Ontario Green as Cerantola struck out 12 in five innings. The Mississippi State commit had his fastball/curveball combo working early on and was no match for opposing hitters. He did fall into some command issues with his fastball, started when he went out of the stretch and was missing mostly up and to arm side. He settled down and finished allowing only one hit and zero runs, and was in line for the win.

Caden Griffin LHP / OF / John McCrae , ON / 2019 Rankings  State Rank:4 POS:2 Overall Rank:338 POS:40 The uncommitted 2019 left-hander out of Ottawa was on the mound for Atlantic to start the championship game. All Griffin did was turn in five no-hit innings while walking two and striking out 9. The lefty sat 82-85 and was fastball/changeup for the entire outing, keeping his curveball in the back pocket for the day. He attacked hitters and really repeated his delivery with arm speed out front.

Brandon Deans RHP / OF / Our Lady of Mount Carmel, ON / 2019 Rankings  State Rank:25 POS:5 Deans followed his Futures teammate Griffin to Atlantic for the championship, looking the part of a closer as he worked the last two innings pumping straight fastballs in the 84-87 mph range. The arm works from Deans and he seemed to embrace the last inning where some young arms may have handled that situation differently. Chance to be a big time arm, Deans will need to continue to develop his secondary stuff as the fastball and actions are present and only going to get better.
