This week, On the Hunt, takes a look at some promising pitchers and outfielders who showed great promise throughout the winter. Each player shows athleticism and a chance to burst onto the national scene this spring and summer. Players from KY, MD, MO, NJ, ON, OK are represented.
Devin Hack, OF/LHP, Somerville HS, NJ, 2019
Hack emerged as a player to follow after performing very well at PBR New Jersey’s Preseason All-State showcase. Still showing a young, developing frame, the 5-foot-11, 165-pound Hack showed off impressive speed (6.80 60-yard dash) and a strong throwing arm (84 mph) to go along with a balanced stroke at the plate. Setting up balanced and slightly open, Hack starts with his hands held back past the shoulder. He loads by crouching his weight into the back leg before showing off quick hands through the zone with some lag as well as strength. Hack shows current line drive power from gap to gap, but should add more power in the near future as he continues to add strength to his frame. In the outfield, Hack exhibits bouncy athleticism with sure hands. He has a strong, accurate arm that shows carry with more to come in the future. Hack brings a hard-working, blue collar attitude to the way he goes about his business, and his tunnel vision was hard to miss at the event (he even avoided rogue gloves without blinking during the fielding portion). Hack’s athleticism only stands to get better with physical maturity, and because of that he has a chance to stick in centerfield at a high level.
