On the Hunt: Top 2018 Arms Uncommitted

Every time I think that the talented 2018 class has settled on commitments to various universities, new, highly talented players pop up. This installment of, On the Hunt, takes a look at some of the top uncommitted arms in the 2018 class. These pitchers (8 in total with 2 left-handers), have made some noise across the country recently, and are beginning to stir major interest from different schools. Each of them show higher ceilings that when reached will give them a chance to be impact players at the next level. Players included hail from Florida, New Jersey, Texas, and Wisconsin.

Alex Degen RHP / Hunterdon Central, NJ / 2018Degen drew one of the biggest crowds of recruiters to his outing at the Garden State Underclass Games. Equipped with a quick, strong arm, the 6-foot-6, 195-pound right-hander has a high ceiling, and a frame that is still maturing and adding muscle. Degen has been up to 89 mph on a downward plane, and repeats his delivery and arm slot very well for a young player with such long limbs. What I really liked about him, was his ability to spin an 11/5 (near 12/6 at times) curveball at 71-74. The pitch received multiple swings and misses, and with added velocity could become a real weapon. He also shows a changeup at 77-78. Degen will be highly coveted by college programs all summer, and has a chance to be a starter at the next level.
