The clouds were threatening early on in the day, and there was a brief period of rain in the morning, but Friday’s games at Diamond Nation in New Jersey for the Super 17 Tournament went off without a hitch (save for a bus that was delayed in traffic from New England), and there was plenty of talent to go around for the many college recruiters in attendance. While many uncommitted players had great days, and opened the eyes of those in attendance, some committed ones continued to progress and will have their college coaches counting the days until they make it to campus. In this edition of, On the Hunt, I take a look at some of the committed players that caught my eye on the day.
Shane Smith RHP / Governors Academy, MA / 2018Rankings State Rank:5 POS:2 Overall Rank:75 POS:32
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander is committed to Wake Forest, and showed off what might turn into electric stuff in the near future. He pitched in the final game that I saw, and sat 87-90 for most of his outing while flashing a firm, 77-78 breaking ball that shows swing and miss action. He also flashed a few changeups that he showed feel for. Smith steps across his body for effect, and comes from a, nearly, over the top slot with a short arm swing. I was impressed with the way he elevated his fastball late in counts, and with his large frame there may be even more velocity in the future. |
Cody Morissette SS / 2B / Exeter, NH / 2018Morissette was all over the field in the late game, and showed off his athleticism at second base and at the plate. The infielder has a quick first step and wiry athleticism on his 6-foot, 165-pound frame. He laid out to make plays, and showed solid hands with lots of energy. At the plate, the left-handed hitter showed a simple approach, and was not scared to hit with two strikes. He shows the same athleticism on the base paths that he does in the field. High energy guy who will fit in well at Boston College. |
