Saturday at Diamond Nation continued the Super 17 Tournament, and presented new prospects to see as well as second go arounds on the talent seen on day 1. The day started off with a crowd gathering to watch Garden State Underclass standout, 2018 RHP John Kelly. Kelly was the big winner on Wednesday night as he ran his fastball up to 93 mph. While he did not hit the 93 mph that he did on Wednesday, Kelly sat mostly 86-88 during the 8 AM start, and showcased a 76-78 slider that he shows feel for, and has a solid chance of being a swing and miss pitch in the future. Kelly has a calm, yet determined focus while on the mound, and he worked his way out of some trouble throughout the overcast morning. Kelly appears to have more velocity in his future, as his frame is still developing, and he should find more strength in the near future. Overall, it was another great day at the ballpark, especially for the uncommitted players who were able to show off their talents for the college recruiters in attendance.
Alex Margot LHP / 1B / Collingswood, NJ / 2019Rankings State Rank:22 POS:2
Margot was back on the same mound that he pitched on in Wednesday’s Garden State Underclass event, and he continued to showcase a high ceiling. At 6-foot-3, 190-pounds, Margot stands high above the hitter from the mound, and his long limbs allow him to nearly touch the mitt as he strides out toward the plate and releases out of his near ¾ slot. Margot’s fastball sat 83-84 and showed some arm side run. His long, loose arm shows little effort, and there is much more to come. Margot struggled at times high to his arm side with the fastball, but was able to re-find his slot by mixing in his 69-71, 2/8 curveball, and getting his release point out in front. Margot’s curveball shows multi-tier break when at its best, and I believe it has a chance to become a swing and miss pitch in the future. Margot has a high ceiling, and loose arm will likely find more velocity in the near future. |
