Oklahoma Winter Open I.D.: Top Performers

On December 18th, Prep Baseball Report Oklahoma held its second event, the Oklahoma Winter Open I.D., in Yukon Oklahoma. Over 40 players from around the state from every high school class attended the event while college coaches and a pro scout took note.

Player profiles have been updated with profile pictures, stats, and videos. In days to come, we will break down the event position-by-position. Today, we will take an in-depth look at the the top performers from the event. Though some of these athletes play multiple positions, they will be covered today in the position they most stood out at. Click on the player’s name to see their full profile.

Left-Handed Pitchers

Hunter Burnett, Edmond North HS (2019)

A 6-foot-1, 180-pound durable build. Uses a clean delivery with average tempo and some rhythm. Short arm circle in the back, slight pause before coming through, 3/4 slot with some fluidity. Fastball sits 79-81 mph with some run and flashed late sink when down in the zone. Slider shows 2/8 shape with late bite at times, 72-73 mph. Changeup is thrown with full arm speed, some sink, 74-75.

Cash Colvin, Tuttle HS, (2018)
A 6-foot-3, 210-pound proportional and thick frame. Works from a simple and slow delivery with repeatability.  Arm drops straight down out of the break with a quick change of direction, high-3/4 slot. Fastball has constant downhill tilt and deception that flashes some run at 80-82 mph, commanded when in rhythm.  Changeup sits 75-76 mph.

Right-Handed Pitchers


Mason Skrimager, RHP, Enid HS (2019)
A 5-foot-9, 160 pound athletic frame. Uses a controlled delivery with some rhythm, full arm circle, high-3/4 slot, quality leg drive, and balanced finished. Fastball flashes late sink, sits 82-84 mph, fills up the zone. Changeup shows slight fade and sink, 68-71 mph.

Caden Young, Choctaw HS (2019)
A 6-foot, 165-pound  frame with broad shoulders and long legs. On the mound, works with good tempo and rhythm, short arm action, high-3/4 slot, finishes to the first base side. Fastball keeps its plane, 80-82 mph, for strikes. Slider sits 68-69 mph, 11/5 shape, some late depth, also for strikes. Curveball shows 12/6 shape, 62-63 mph. Changeup has some fade, 67-68 mph.

Catchers


Carson Kropp, Owasso HS (2018)

A 6-foot-2 , 215-pound muscular, lean, athletic frame. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-pull approach, mostly flat. Wide athletic stance, some rhythm, short, slightly closed stride, late heal plant, late arm bar, strong hands, aggressive swings, 84 mph exit velo. Defensively, good receiver, consistent feet and exchange,  over the top arm action, 76 mph to second, 1.93-2.01 showcase pops, flashed some accuracy. Ran a 4.51 home-to-first. 

Nollan Koon, Yukon HS (2019)

A 5-foot-9, 165-pound frame with some strength. Offensively, left-handed hitter, middle opposite field approach, some lift. Hits from a wide, back leg heavy stance with a slight squat. Uses a knee-knock leg kick to start the swing, hands drop and pull in to be short to the ball, some bat whip and speed. Defensively, an excellent exchange, soft hands, good feet, narrow stance, some bounce when blocking. Short arm action, good carry, 71 mph, 1.95-2.05 showcase pops, some accuracy.

Middle Infielders

Conner Gore, SS, Enid HS, 2020

A 6-foot, 160-pound athletic build with long levers. Defensively, advanced feet and hands, shows athleticism on the slow roller play. Throws from multiple slots with accuracy, 72 mph, arm action is clean and will continue to get stronger as Gore develops. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-oppo approach, flat. Hits from a balanced athletic stance, loose with rhythm, moderate knee-knock leg kick, quality leg drive, good extension, high finish. Ran a 4.58 home to first.

Hunter Hughes, 2B, Tutle HS, 2018
A 5-foot-10, 175-pound frame with strength throughout. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-pull approach, flat, peppered the back of the cage. Uses a balanced stance, some knee bend, slight rocking load, moderate stride, fast strong hands, and a high finish, 88 mph exit velo. Defensively, advanced feet, good hands, some stiffness in the arm, 73 mph, accurate. Ran a 4.26 home-to-first.

Corner Infielders

Hunter Gholston, 3B, Elk City HS, 2018
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound athletic frame. Offensively, left-handed hitter, mainly middle of the field approach, some strength to the opposite field, groundball /line drive results. Uses a back leg heavy set up with a slight squat, toe tap stride, flat through contact, some length. Posses bat speed and hand strength,tied for an event best 90 mph exit velo. Defensively, shows athleticism, especially on the slow roller play, fields the ball a deep, average feet. High-3/4 slot, 82 mph, some accuracy. Ran an event best 3.95 home-to-first.

Cade Lott, 3B,  McAlester HS, 2020

A 5-foot-11, 175-pound advanced athletic build. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle opposite filed approach, lifts most balls. Hits from a balanced stance, big knee-knock leg kick, arm bar load, some length, uphill path.  Showed advanced bat speed for his age, 85 mph exit velo,  and barreled almost every ball in the cage.  Defensively, good hands, clean footwork, smooth exchanges, 3/4 slot,  73 mph. Ran a 4.64 home-to-first.

Dalton Smith, 1B, Choctaw HS, 2018
A 6-foot, 180-pound athletic build with long levers.  Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle of the field approach, some lift. Hits form an athletic open stance, short stride, late heal plant, and good rhythm. Flashes advanced bat speed, hitting some balls very hard, 89 mph exit velo. Tied for second best at the event with a 4.15 home-to-first. Defensively, quick athletic actions, good hands, average feet. Throws from an over the top slot with accuracy, 75 mph.

Outfielders

Joshua Detweiler, Moore HS (2017)
A 6-foot, 190-pound strong athletic build. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-oppo, flat approach, shows bat speed, had one of the best rounds of BP at the event. Hits from a balanced stance with an athletic base, uses almost no load, very simple, rotational swing, flat path to contact. Runs a 4.22 home-to-first. Defensively, accurate arm, high 3/4 slot, 83 mph, some stiffness.

Weston Jervis, Tuttle HS (2019)

A 6-foot, 180-pound proportional frame. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-oppo, flat approach, excellent round of BP. Balanced upright set-up, smooth load, small stride with late heal plant for timing, efficient path to contact, loose hands, flat through extension. Creates an 87 mph exit velo.  Runs a 4.25 home-to-first. Defensively, average hands and feet, high-3/4 slot,  73 mph position velo.

Bryce Madron, Blanchard HS (2020)
A 5-foot-7, 145-pound athletic frame. Offensively, left-handed hitter, middle-pull approach, consistent hard contact, produced lift. Hits from a relaxed, upright, open stance, slight leg kick, quick hands, uphill path, balanced swing, 80 mph exit velo.  Runs a 4.16 home-to-first. Defensively, quick, athletic actions, charges the ball well, short arm circle, 3/4 slot, 76 mph from the outfield. 

Brandon Rutledge, McAlester HS (2018)
A 5-foot-8, 150-pound athletic build. Offensively, right-handed hitter, opposite field, flat approach, found consistent barrel in BP. Balanced athletic stance, slight leg kick, fast hands, aggressive swing, 88 mph exit velo. Runs a 4.15 home-to-first. Defensively, smooth, confident actions, good hands, short, quick high-3/4 slot, some accuracy, 85 mph from the outfield. Rutledge has better all of his previous numbers in under two months time.

Chandler Shapard, Heritage Hall HS (2018)
A 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with plenty of room to add size and strength. Offensively, right-handed hitter, line drive/ground ball pull side approach. Hits from a relaxed, upright, open stance, moderate stride, flat path, high finish, 84 mph exit velo. Runs a 4.44 home-to-first. Defensively, possesses an electric arm, 89 mph from a high-3/4 slot.
