The first annual Oklahoma Preseason All-State Showcase is in the books. A roster of 50 uncommitted players from the state’s 2018-2020 classes filled the World Baseball Outreach indoor facility in Tulsa, looking to prove themselves and put on a show. You can check out all of the top measureable stats in each category from the event here. Over the next few days and weeks, video and full scouting reports will be added to each profile to go along with the stats and pictures. But first, here are some brief scouting notes on players that stood out:

The Arms

+ Though there were many pitchers at the event that will eventually find their way into college baseball, two junior right-handers made a case that they are ready right now. Landon Grissom (Stonewall HS) sat 86-88 mph, using an athletic, max effort delivery. Grissom also showcased easily one of the best sliders in the class at 75-76 mph along with a changeup and curveball. Evan Kowalski (Guthrie HS) is a physical 6-foot-2, 207-pounder that showed excellent command of four pitches. Using a free and easy arm action from a high-3/4 slot, Kowalski’s fastball ranged 86-88 mph with both the slider and the curveball in the high 70s. He also showed advanced feel for a mid-70s changeup.

+ Possibly the most impressive showing of the day came from 2020 RHP Trevor Martin (Asher HS). A physically advanced 6-foot-3, 200-pound athlete, Martin showed a rhythmic and fluid delivery that produced a fastball sitting 83-85. Also showing good feel for the changeup and curveball, he performed well beyond his years.

The Bats

+ The best round of BP at the event was taken by left-handed hitting 2018 1B/OF Mason Carrier (Edmond North). After showing strength on the tee with a 97 exit velo, Carrier showed barrel control by back spinning almost every ball to the oppo corner of the cage. Carrier also ran a 6.91 60.

+ Left-handed hitting OF 2020 Jace Bohrofen (Westmoore HS) took an impressive round of BP himself, staying flat in the middle of the cage with bat speed. Along with Bohrofen, two more freshmen made a splash. Cameron Uselton (Westmoore HS) showed advanced strength and athletic actions both in the middle infield and with the bat, while Cade Horton (Norman HS) solidified that he is one of, if not the, best infielders in the 2020 class.

+ As far as projection and tools for position players in the 2019 class, OF Patrick Murphy (Carl Albert HS) and 3B/OF Blake Robertson (Edmond Santa Fe) lead the way. Robertson already possesses an 89 mph exit velo from the left side thanks to his extremely long levers and can still controls the barrel. Robertson also showed off a loose and strong arm that will only get better with strength. Murphy possesses a blend of speed and strength with an 88 mph exit velo and runs a 6.72 60 with plenty of room to continue to fill out his 6-foot, 165-pound frame.

The Two-Ways

+ A pair of 2019s stood out on both sides of the ball in a big way. Daniel Merrill (NOAH Home School) is a loose bodied, 6-foot-5, 190-pound athlete that posted a 6.88 60 and an exit velo of 90 mph. On the mound Merrill shows a clean and easy arm action that produced strikes at 78-80 mph. He has been as high as 83 mph in the past. 3B/RHP Wade Elliott (Deer Creek HS) is coming off a knee injury that doesn’t seem to be slowing him down a bit. Elliott put up the biggest exit velo of the event, 99 mph, and transferred it effectively to the cage, blasting balls to the pull-side gap. Elliott was also around the zone with an 84 mph four-seam fastball.
