Northern VA Open ID: Pitcher Analysis

Last week, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC held the first of its fall series of prospect events, the Northern Virginia Open ID at Patriot High School. A lot of talent was on display during the event, here is a breakdown of the pitchers at the event:

+Antonio Buckley, LHP, Westfield, 2017
Buckley is an athletic lefty who throws primarily from a low three-quarters arm slot. He has a smooth drop and drive delivery and a short, quick arm that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are online and level as he strides out to a square landing, finishing in an athletic position. His fastball was 72-76 on the day. Buckley’s secondary pitches were outstanding, as he has the ability to throw a curveball and a slider that have different shapes and velocity from the same arm slot. The curveball ran 62-64 with sharp 1/7 break and the slider ran 67-68 with sharp 2/8 break. Buckley also threw a good changeup that had sinking action, good armspeed, and ran 67-70. Buckley had good command of his secondary pitches and has a lot of pitchability.

+Connor Campbell, LHP, St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes, 2018
Campbell has a smooth tall and fall delivery and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short, quick arm action that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are closed and slightly uphill as he strides out to a slightly closed landing. Campbell’s fastball had sinking action to it and sat 74-75, touching 77 on his last pitch. He threw a very good curveball with power 1/7 break as well as a good changeup with good armspeed that ran 61-64. He showed good command of all of his pitches and just gets outs.

+Garrett Canterbury, RHP, Flint Hill, 2018
Canterbury is an athletic righty who has a drop and drive delivery and throws from an over the top arm slot. He has a long, stiff arm action and generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are closed and slightly down as he strides out, landing on line with an open front foot and falling off a bit as he finishes. Canterbury’s fastball had late run to it and sat 68-69. He threw a sharp 12/6 curveball that ran 57-62. He also showed a straight change with good armspeed that ran 60-65.

+Connor Cropp, MIF/RHP, Osbourn Park, 2019
Cropp has an athletic frame and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a smooth drop and drive delivery. He has a short, loose arm action and a quick arm that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are level and closed as he strides out to a slightly open landing. Cropp’s fastball ran 71-73, touching 74, and was commanded well. His curveball had sharp downer action and was thrown with good armspeed, sitting 65-66. His changeup was throw with good armspeed and had a bit of run to it, sitting 67-70.

+Nickolas Dean, RHP/C, Osbourn Park, 2017
Dean drops down and throws from a sidearm slot with a drop and drive delivery. His arm action is short and loose and he has decent armspeed that generates velocity with regular effort. He strides out on line and lands a bit closed and finishes in an athletic position. Dean’s fastball has heavy run and sat 68-71. His slider has late, hard, 10/4 break and ran 63-64. His changeup had armside run and sat 66-69.

+Nick Fontana, RHP/IF, Osbourn Park, 2018
On the mound, Fontana has a smooth delivery and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot. He has long, loose arm action and a quick arm that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are closed and slightly uphill as he strides out on line to a slightly closed landing. Fontana’s fastball was 79-82 with late run. His curveball was very good, with sharp 11/5 break that ran 67-70. He also threw a changeup with very good armspeed that had armside run and sat 75-76.

+Ross Fontana, RHP, Osbourn Park, 2017
Fontana is a lanky righty who throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short, loose arm action and a quick arm that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are closed and slightly uphill as he strides out to a closed landing and falls off as he finishes. Fontana’s fastball has heavy run and sat 77-78, touching 79. His slider is good and has sharp 10/4 break, running 67-68. His changeup was 74-76. He commanded his fastball and breaking ball very well.

+Tommy Logan, CIF/RHP, Patriot, 2017
Logan has a strong lower half and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. He has a long arm action and throws with normal effort. His shoulders are level and closed as he strides out to a square landing. Logan’s fastball sat 74-76 with late run. His curveball had big, gradual 11/5 break that ran 61-64 and his changeup had armside run and sat 64-66.

+Garrett Lutkins, LHP, Potomac Falls, 2016
Lutkins throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a classic lefty crossfire delivery. He has a short, quick arm action and generates easy velocity. His shoulders are closed and level as he strides out to a closed landing. Lutkins’ fastball has heavy run and was 76-78. He threw a late-breaking 2/8 slider that ran 66-70. His changeup was very good, running 70-75 with armside run and good armspeed. He showed good command of all of his pitches.

+Graeme Wright, 3B/RHP, Paul VI, 2017
Wright has a lanky, athletic frame and a smooth drop and drive delivery, throwing from a high three-quarters arm slot. He has a long, loose arm action and a quick arm that velocity with some effort. His shoulders are down and closed as he strides out on line to a slightly open landing. His fastball has heavy run and was 80-82 with good downward plane. His curveball was good and had late, sharp, 12/6 break, sitting 69-71. He also threw a sinking changeup with great armspeed that ran 75-78.

+Sutton Young, RHP, Woodbridge, 2016
Young has a smooth delivery and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot. He has a short, loose, quick arm action that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are level and closed as he strides out to a square landing. Young’s fastball was 81-83 with heavy sink and a bit of run to it. He threw an outstanding curveball, with late, sharp, 11/5 break that ran 69-73. His command of both pitches was very good.
