Northern VA Open ID: Middle Infield Analysis

Last week, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC held the first of its fall series of prospect events, the Northern Virginia Open ID at Patriot High School. A lot of talent was on display during the event, here is a breakdown of the middle infielders at the event:

+Connor Cropp, SS/2B, Osbourn Park, 2019
Hit from an open stance that stood tall.  Quiet and controlled hands.  No load back. Balanced stride that gets back on line.  Comes up out legs when lower half turns.  Exit velocity of 70mph.  Short, clean bat path with extension.  Line drive hitter with gap power potential.  In the field, threw from a loose, high ¾ arm slot.  Throws were somewhat accurate.  Positional velocity of 73mph.  Good glove presentation.  Average hands.  Footwork a little stiff and rigid at times.

+James Delaney, SS/OF, Gonzaga, 2017
Hit from a balanced, athletic stance.  Smooth load back with a controlled stride that stays on line.  Slight arm bar on initial move to the ball that makes him long at times.  Lower half explodes to the ball.  Bat exit velocity of 83mph.  Good approach to the round.  Level swing path with good extension.  Line drive hitter with pull power.  In the field, threw from a quick, high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had some accuracy.  Positional velocity of 75mph.  Average hands.  Footwork did not stay fluid.  Quick, clean exchanges.  Played through the ball when feet kept moving.

+Michael Fyvie, 2B/OF, Patriot, 2018
Hit from a balanced/athletic stance.  Fluid rhythm in hands and lower body.  Smooth load back with a slight leg kick stride. Stays on line.  Decent lower half turn to the ball.  Quick hands that had a bat exit velocity of 83mph.  Swing path stays level through the zone.  At times has good extension.  Line drive hitter with gap power.  In the field, threw from a loose, ¾ arm slot.  At times arm action gets stiff.  Throws had some accuracy.  Positional velocity of 75mph.  Average hands with footwork that showed athleticism.  Showed some ability to cover ground.  Footwork was fluid and played through at times.  Quick, clean exchanges.

+Pierce Gallo, SS, Paul VI, 2019
Hit from a tall, balanced stance.  Smooth load back with a leg kick stride that stays on line and balanced.  Fluid rhythm to swing.  Lower half exploded to the ball.  Bat exit velocity of 85mph.  Explosive hands.  Good approach to the round.  Short level swing path that had good extension.  Line drive hitter with gap power.  Projects to be an elite level high school hitter.  Threw from quick, loose ¾ arm slot.  Throws had some accuracy.  Positional velocity of 78mph.  Soft hands with fluid footwork.  Quick, clean exchanges.  Played through the ball and showed some athleticism with his feet.

+Jared Johnson, SS/2B, Patriot, 2018
Hit from balanced and athletic stance.  Smooth load back with a controlled stride that stays on line.  Average lower half turn to the ball, at times sits on back side.  Good balance maintained throughout swing.  Bat exit velocity of 77mph.  Short path to the ball that stays level and extends through the ball.  Line drive hitter.  In the field, threw from a quick, loose high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had accuracy.  Positional velocity of 72mph.  Good glove presentation.  Soft hands with quick, clean exchanges.  Footwork was quick and fluid.  Played through the ball.  Showed some athleticism and ability to move laterally. 

+Pedro Mendez, 2B/SS, Osbourn Park, 2018
Hit from a tall, balanced stand with good rhythm in his hands.  Not much of load back.  Stride dives in his closes his front side off.  Average lower half turn.  Bat exit velocity of 65mph.  Balance maintained throughout swing.  Arm bars on approach to the ball and works around the ball.  Swing path is level through the zone.  Produces line drives when he stays through the ball.  In the field, threw from a loose, high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had some accuracy.  Positional velocity of 70mph.  Average hands with clean footwork that could have been quicker at times.  Occassionaly played through the ball when feet were quick.

+Derrick Newman, SS/RHP, Bishop O’Connell, 2018
Hit from a balanced stance that stood slightly open.  Good rhythm in his hands at start.  Smooth load back.  Stride foot got back on line.  Average lower half turn to the ball.  Quick hands with bat exit velocity of 83mph.  Good approach to the round.  Short and level swing path with extension.  Line drive hitter with gap power.  Really attacks the ball.  In the field, threw from a loose, high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had accuracy.  Positional velocity of 73mph.  Good glove presentation with average hands.  Footwork was methodical.  Quick, clean exchanges.  Plays through the ball when feet are quick.

+Christian Pitura, SS/OF, Chantilly, 2017
Hit from balanced stance that stood slightly open.  Smooth load back with a controlled stride that got back on line.  Good lower half turn the ball.  Bat exit velocity of 81mph.  Loses top hand on approach to the ball.  Bat path was long at times.  Good extension.  Line drive hitter with gap power.  In the field, threw from a quick, high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had some accuracy.  Average hands with footwork that played through the ball.  Quick, clean exchanges.

+Matthew Ritchie, 2B/SS, Broad Run, 2017
Hit from a balanced and athletic stance on both sides of the plate.  Swings mimicked one another.  Smooth load back with modified leg kick stride that stayed on line and balanced.  Does not finish back leg drive through the ball.  Balance maintained throughout swing.  Hands were quick through the zone with a bat exit velocity of 81mph from the right side and 75mph from the left.  Good approach to the round on both sides.  Swing path was short and had good extension at times.  Line drive swing.  In the field, threw from a quick and loose high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had accuracy.  Positional velocity of 78mph.  Soft hands with quick, clean exchanges.  Fluid footwork that played through the ball.  Showed some athleticism with his footwork.
