JACKSONVILLE, FL—The North Florida Open had some good, young talent in attendance that we look forward to following in their recruiting process. We also had a very interesting senior in OF Ryan Brooks (University Christian HS, FL), who is still uncommitted. He’s a little under the radar because he’s also a standout linebacker on the gridiron. He came out to the North Florida Open after playing football the night before.
At 6 feet, 180 pounds, he has a tightly wound, compact, muscular and athletic frame with big raw power. He had the most raw power by far at the showcase. From the outfield, he has athletic actions with a short arm stroke and average arm strength (80 mph) when he stays on top of the ball, but he is limited to a corner spot. At the plate, he has a good base, stays balanced, and has very good bat speed and strength with some loft in his swing. He showed good power in both gaps, with big power to his pull side. He has an aggressive approach and doesn’t get cheated. Brooks ran a 7.1-second 60 and had an 89 mph exit bat speed velocity off of a tee. He’s being recruited in football, but wants to play college baseball. He’s a bit raw due to being in football season, but will continue to improve with baseball reps. He has a very high ceiling.
