Norcal Player of the Week: Ruben (R.J.) Garcia
March 5, 2019
2019 C Ruben (R.J.) Garcia of Buhach Colony HS has been named the Prep Baseball Report Northern California Player of the Week due to his outstanding week at and behind the plate.
At the present time he is an uncommitted senior, though he has been recruited and his coach indicates that he has some recruited walk-on opportunities if he so chooses to accept them. If the slugging catcher continues to play like he did during his team's first week of the season, he is going to receive more opportunities. Then again, if he plays like he did in week one, he will finish the season hitting 1.000!
Garcia was 7-for-7 in the first two games for the Buhach Colony Thunder this year. On Monday 2/25/19 vs Modesto HS he was 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI, as BC won the the game 1-0 in 5 innings. On Friday 3/1/19 vs Gregori HS, Garcia continued his perfect week, going 4-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and an RBI as the Thunder posted a 9-1 win. If you're counting, the senior catcher is batting 1.000 as the season just started. He slugged at a 1.285 clip and presently has an OPS of 2.286. Garcia also caught all 12 innings during the week and was instrumental in the BC pitching staff posting an 0.58 ERA.
He is a 4-year varsity player and team captain. In 2018 he was named 1st Team Central California Conference catcher. Coach Greg Wakefield had this to add about R.J.... "strong receiver and definitely produces more strikes on border line pitches than average. I let him call the game so the success our pitchers had the first week is directly attributable to R.J. Good pop times. Excellent student in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Buhach Colony, 4.13 GPA ranking him 26 out of 1880 students at BC. He has all the athletic tools and academic skills to be a good D1 catcher."
For his performance Ruben (R.J.) Garcia has been named the Prep Baseball Report Norcal Player of the Week for the week of February 25th - March 3rd. We salute R.J’s accomplishments and wish him and his team continued success both on-and-off the field.
