LINCOLN, CA. - Historically first basemen are typically not the most athletic players on a college or major league roster; well times have changed. First basemen have to be more athletic, more flexible and more in-tune with what is going on around the bag more than ever. Someone who has the agility, throwing arm, and raw speed to play another position, usually plays somewhere other than first base. In Rodriguez’s case, this is not true, he has the foundations of a corner infielder that will serve him well going forward and perhaps transitioning into a different role in the future. With 50+ representatives from 24 MLB Organizations in attendance, some teams 2-3 deep, and the profound talent on the NorCal ProCase roster Rodriguez has put evaluators on notice with his big time power and bat speed, two things that cannot be taught.
THE REPORT:
Body: Large, physical build, frame supports size, athletic body, room for more physical growth.
Hit: Mildly open stance, small leg kick for timing, small hand loop during load, longer swing path, quality extension from long arms.
Power: Carry tool. Raw, above-average, natural strength, some loft with an uphill plane, 100+MPH 104(max) exit velocities.
Field: Has good lateral movement, and is athletic for size. Footwork around the bag and movements at first base are more fluid compared to third base. Rodriguez projects to be a future first baseman.
Arm: Average. Throws from third tailed and conked out at times, but can throw from all angles. Double play turns from first, were more crisp and on line.
Run: Adequate for size, 7.22 60-Yard.
THE COMP:
CJ Cron (Detroit Tigers)
SUMMARY:
When it's all said and done, Rodriguez will be hanging his hat on the bat, where he projects as a power hitting first baseman. Rodriguez has the build and physical tools to create the vision of a high slugging percentage first baseman, with his fair share of home runs. His quality physical power tool and significant raw power are currently his carry tool. His fielding at third base is solid, however he needs to polish it up if he wants to stick there long term. Rodriguez likely ends up a first baseman who could potentially see himself fulfilling a power role in the middle of a lineup.
