NorCal Player of the Week

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Now that the spring break tournaments are over, teams have returned to their league/conference schedules. What is and always has been the case in high school sports competition, is league wins are hard to come by, no matter the talent level of the competing teams. In a number of leagues in the CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section they play three game series during a week. The first game often sets the tone for the remainder of the series. On Tuesday April 11th, Woodcreek HS (Roseville) defeated Yuba City in a tight 2-1 ballgame. As is often said in baseball, a team is often as good as the starting pitcher. In this case, that axiom held true.

As such, we have selected 2024 RHP Austin Nye of Woodcreek HS as the NorCal Player of the Week for the week of April 10th - April 15th, 2023.

The Vanderbilt commit is generally on his game and known to be an outstanding competitor, regardless of his raw stuff (which is fantastic) which has earned him a lofty ranking, both in California and nationally. He took the ball on a Friday night at the Yuba City Honkers, which is one of the most fun high school baseball environments in Northern California. He took the ball and didn't let anyone else on his team have it.

When the dust was settled he had gone 7 innings, throwing 101 pitches and facing only 26 batters. Nye punched out 16 hitters, gave up three singles, walked one, hit one batter, and after his team gave him a 2-1 lead in the top of the 7th, he acted as his own closer in the bottom half of the inning. Nye struck out every player in the line-up except one, and further more he struck out seven of the hitters at least twice.
