NorCal Notes: Spring Scouting - 2022's

New Episode LIVE now! - At The Yard Podcast
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA - Over the entirety of the spring, chasing around good high school teams and known players (draft prospects, future draft prospects, etc), most of whom are already committed, a scout is inevitably going to come across players he'd not previously had much or any awareness of. Often times those players are seniors, some who had just been underexposed during the summer tournament and showcase circuit, some who steadily got better each high school season, and some players who just slipped through the scouting cracks. While it might be and probably is too late for them to get scooped up by a 4-year college program, the purpose here is to illuminate them and as most will go to a junior college, get their names on some follow lists as they continue to pursue their biggest dreams in the game.
Order is simply from me going through my rosters, one at a time, then going over them again to make sure I didn't miss a player... again:
Name | Pos | High School | B/T | Notes |
Korey Williams | SS | Elk Grove | R/R | There are only a handful of SS we have ranked ahead of the multi-talented Williams, for good reason, he's a skilled and toolsy player |
Jackson Nystrom | OF | Livermore | R/R | Physical RHH with aggressive nature and legitimate power, nearly homered into the stiff Casa Grande wind in NCS playoff game |
JoJo Roman | C | Heritage | R/R | Exremely agile/athletic behind plate, quick strong accurate arm, has a steady presence behind plate and bat talent to blossom |
Jalen Owens | CF | Heritage | R/R | Ballhawk in CF, perhaps fastest runner I saw all spring, 3.98-4.04 down line on a couple of left side ground balls |
JC Agard | 3B | Sacred Heart Cathedral | R/R | ProCase participant in 2021, big arm across diamond, middle of the line-up bat talent w/power, big arm also plays on the mound |
Chris De Langis | CF | Terra Linda | L/L | Had strong statistical season, easy stroke, athletic body w/smooth athletic actions in CF |
Michael May | 3B | Oak Ridge | R/R | On a team w/many D1 commits, he appeared to me to be their best overall talent, athletic actions, strong arm, swing works |
Dylan Snider | C | Napa | S/R | Strong athletic body, runs well, particularly so for a catcher, switch hit talent both sides of plate, produced strong XBH numbers |
Jake Moore | CF | Tamalpais | R/R | Lead-off hitter, lean athletic body, strong arm, but its the bat talent and plus speed that stands out the most, fringe draft talent |
Tyler Wood | RHP | De La Salle | Long strong body, strike thower with upper 80s stuff, feel for slider to both sides, has CHG too, upside for MORE stuff still there | |
Dom Tuyor | IF/OF | California | R/R | Hit in 3-hole for one of the region's top HS teams, at-bats vs one of area's top RHP were outstanding in NCS playoff, bat looks real |
Gabe Henderson | RHP | McClatchy | R/R | Strike-thower w/compact arm, repeatable delivery, powerful football type body, has breaking ball too, has pop at the plate |
Nick Walsh | 2B | Foothill | S/R | Hit-getting ability on both sides of plate, lean wiry body so can still get stronger, approach and barrel feel stood out |
Caleb Ford | SS | Ukiah | R/R | Quick footed SS, rangy with sticky hands and compact quick arm, smaller athlete build (5-9 165), quick bat, middle of field LD hitter |
Tyler James | 3B | Vanden | R/R | Well-rounded w/big arm, best at-bats and approach & contact on team, showed HR & XBH talent vs one of best LHP I saw all spring |
Nick Andrews | SS/P | Justin-Siena | R/R | Legitimate gap-gap bat talent, plays w/an edge and confidence, capable defender projects to 2B, was his conference MVP |
Dominic DeFeo | C | Palo Alto | R/R | Physical RHH, power/XBH ability plays gap to gap, steady & strong defense behind plate, good receiver w/hints of C/T talent |
Hasani Johnson | 2B | Franklin | S/R | Good runner, quick bat, has some twitchiness and competitiveness that shows up offensively and defensively, lean athletic body |
Dylan Peterson | IF/OF | Casa Grande | R/R | Consistent middle of field hitting approach, short stroke, hit-ability w/ability to perform in big moments, solid run, projects as 2B/OF |
Alec Nava | 2B | De La Salle | R/R | Strong compact body, lead-off & steady consistent presence for one of top teams, has barrel feel, all fields stroke, gritty competitor |
