WINNETKA, IL – In front of a handful of scouts, Ben Brecht got his first start at home this season. Behind Brecht, New Trier went on to shutout De La Salle 8-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
Brecht, a UC Santa Barbara commit, worked five stress free innings striking out eight and allowing just three hits and a walk. In his second inning of work he struck out two batters looking and got into a groove as he struck out the side in his third inning. Brecht’s fastball reached as high as 89 mph and sat comfortably in the 84-86 mph range early on in his outing. Junior right-hander Peter Schuldt worked the final two innings to preserve the shutout.
The Trevians got on the board in the first inning when leadoff hitter Kevin Donahue worked a walk and advanced to third on a double by Matt Kann. Junior catcher Dylan Horvitz came thru with a two run single to get the scoring started. In the fourth inning Horvitz again came up with two runners on and took a curveball on the inner half out to left field for a three run homer. Horvitz finished the day 2-3 with five RBIs.
Isidro DeSantiago, Fernando Moreno, and Josh Figueroa had hits for the Meteors.
New Trier improves to 2-2 on the season and returns to action tomorrow at home against Richards.
More in-depth player notes will be posted in the Illinois Scout Blog later.
