New Hope defeats Germantown, 2-0

Madison – Last night the Prep Baseball Report staff was on hand to catch the playoff match-up between the New Hope Trojans and the Germantown Mavericks. Although both teams had solid performances on the mound, Germantown falls behind early, allowing New Hope to capture a 2-0 victory.
2017, uncommitted, RHP Peyton Buckner (New Hope HS), got the start and recorded the win throwing six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four. Buckner sat 82-84 mph with fastball for most of the game, but velocity did decrease in late innings to 81 mph. Buckner showed breaking ball with solid spin at 72-74 mph and change-up with fading action at 72 mph. Showed solid command, recording a .652 strike percentage and commanded fastball in to left-handed hitters well.
New Hope was lead offensively by 2017 Catcher Thomas Stevens, Northeast CC signee, going two for four on the day, with a big home run to lead off game. 2017 DH Carson Forrester, Mississippi Delta signee, was also big for the Trojans offense, extended the lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning on a single up the middle of the field.
2017 RHP Will Hicks (Germantown HS), Jones County JC signee, records the loss but had a very solid performance. Hick threw seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking one, but strikes out 11. Hicks showed quality fastball at 86-88 mph touching 89 with arm side action, when finishing pitch. Breaking ball had tight spin with late life at 72-74 mph with potential to be out pitch when commanded down. The Mavericks recorded five hits on the day, with 2019 RHP/OF Eric Newsome, Mississippi State recruit, leading them offensively with two singles going two for four.
The Trojans would bring in 2019 uncommitted, RHP Springfield in the seventh inning to hold the lead. Springfield toed the rubber and sat at 80-83 mph and touched 84 with fastball, and showed a breaking ball at 68-71 mph. With a long easy arm action, Springfield shut down the side and closes the game out for the Trojan.
Although the Mavericks played a clean game defensively and pitched very well they failed to get the big hit and fall to the New Hope Trojans 2-0, in Game one of a three game series.
