New England Insider: Prospect Spotlight - Bryce Reagan and His Dream School
Bryce Reagan, a native of Amherst, New Hampshire, is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound infielder playing for Souhegan High School. The 2018 infielder was originally committed to Virginia Tech, but last fall, he committed to play baseball at the University of Texas.
Reagan never thought that he’d have a chance to play baseball at his dream school. Growing up, he loved the Longhorns, rooting for them alongside his father.
“Texas was always this fantasy school my dad loved when I was a kid,” Reagan said. “I never really thought it was possible for a New Hampshire kid to play ball at UT until I got a little older.”
Last summer, the University of Texas had only had four head coaches in its baseball program since 1911, before legendary skipper Augie Garrido stepped down after the 2016 season. The Longhorns managed to snag Tulane’s David Pearce to take over the reigns of their program. In their first season under Pearce, Texas went 39-22 — a 14-win improvement from 2016.
The 17-year-old Amherst native felt that he was really intrigued all around by the University of Texas, causing him to commit to the school.
“I chose Texas because of the outstanding education, facilities and coaching staff.”
Reagan and his high school team have managed to clinch a berth in the state finals against Portsmouth. He really believes that the team has greatly grown closer and come together over the past couple months and believes he has done his job in helping the team get to where it is.
“It’s a brotherhood,” he said. “What I think I have best to help the team win is always playing my part and keeping the energy up in every game.”
Today will be the final game of Reagan’s junior year, meaning he only has a season left with his high school team. He has thoroughly enjoyed playing for his high school program, coining his first game as a freshman back in 2015 as his favorite memory, as he went 4-for-4 against his school’s rival, Milford.
“Playing for Souhegan the past few years has been a ton of fun,” Reagan emphasized. “Love the coaching staff and I get along with everyone on the team… it's just a ton of fun.”
Reagan is known to be one of the top players in the state of New Hampshire for the Class of 2018, as well as a top-50 player in the country. Knowing this could lead you to believe that he may never actually step foot on the University of Texas’ campus in Austin, as he could get drafted right out of high school. Either way, the switch-hitting infielder is going to make an impact at whatever next level he is at.
“At the next level, I think I can impact the game on defense,” he stressed. “I’ve always taken a lot of pride in my infield work and I have so much fun out there. That being said, I think I need to keep working on my defensive game and keep improving everyday. I’ve always been a consistent hitter, but I try to be one percent better every single day.”
Reagan and Souheagan High School will play in the state finals at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium later tonight against Portsmouth at 7:00 p.m.
