TAYLOR - A college commitment to Toledo is an “amazing” feeling according to Tylor Morehouse. “My dream is coming together one piece at a time,” the Riverview Gabriel Richard High School senior said. There were five offers in all, three from Division I schools and one each from D-II and D-III, but the 67th-rated 2024 in Michigan believes the Mid-American Conference university one hour south of home is perfect for him. “They reached out on twitter first that they wanted to see me at a camp,” Morehouse reflected. “I went as a two-way and did well. A week later I got an offer. I went on a couple visits and really enjoyed it and after that I committed. “I enjoyed the coaching staff, they’re competitive and they wanted me. I also liked the campus and the facilities, as well as the opportunity to play two-way.” All the schools that offered Morehouse did so as a two-way, but the 6-2 195-pounder sees UT as the best fit for him in the long run. “With Toledo I felt they wanted me to do both and make an impact on both sides,” noted the 12th-ranked senior shortstop in the state, who is being looked at as a third baseman, “maybe corner outfielder” by Toledo in addition to pitcher. “Growing up I wasn’t sure which I wanted to do more, but this year I started wanting to be a pitcher in college. But I always liked hitting, so to be able to do both is amazing.” The potential of the 17-year-old stands out to UT. “They like my size,” explained Morehouse, pointing to development of offspeed and more power at the plate as two areas of needed improvement in his future. “They like where I’m at now, but they want me to get more developed and see where it can take me.” Morehouse understands the importance of what hard work can do. “The weight room has helped me get stronger, faster and develop my body better,” Morehouse related. “It’s helped me become faster, improve my velo and get quicker with side to side movements.” The desire to play beyond high school has been around for some time. “Since I was growing up I’ve wanted to play college baseball, then the next level after that,” Morehouse said. “This is the next step for me and we’ll see where it takes me.” A commitment brings an end to a recruiting process that was ignited at the beginning of summer. “The Top Prospect Games really got my name out there,” Morehouse pointed out about the PBR event held at Eastern Michigan University in June. “It helped get coaches in contact with me after that. My recruitment started my sophomore year here and there, but after the Top Prospect Games it really blew up and I went on a couple visits. “To finally be able to commit is a stress reliever knowing I have a place to call my home,” Morehouse added. “I’m excited to go there.” Morehouse credited his parents as being the biggest influences on his baseball journey. “My dad and mom have helped me a lot,” Morehouse said. “It’s been us, and I’m thankful to them for the sacrifices and everything they’ve done for me. They put me in the right places for camps and they’ve helped me be the best I can be.” Morehouse, who carries a 3.73 GPA and plans to major in business/entrepreneurship in college, is confident he can make an impact at Toledo. “I’ll bring a lot of competitiveness, leadership and the wanting to win,” Morehouse said. “I’ll be a good teammate and help them be the best they can be. I’ll also bring a lot of work ethic.” It has the senior, who was instrumental in Gabriel Richard winning the Division 4 state championship his sophomore year of high school, excited about the future. “I’m looking forward to being the best guy possible with guys that have similar dreams as me,” Morehouse concluded. “Hopefully, we can bring a MAC championship to Toledo.” |
