The 2015 Mingo Bay Classic got off to a solid start with seven of nine West Virginia teams participating earning wins on day one. Following is a recap of games that PBR staff scouted along with results from games at other tournament locations.
10:00 (Myrtle Beach, HS): East Fairmont 10, Oak Glen 0 (5 innings)
Junior righty Jaccob Bolander, ranked No. 9 in the WV Class of 2016, was dominant striking out five while allowing just one hit in the five inning complete game win. The Bees erupted for nine runs on seven hits to break open a scoreless game in the third inning and pushed across the decisive run on a wild pitch in the 5th to walk-off via the run rule. Bolander mixed a fastball with a solid curveball and changeup mix in facing just two batters over the minimum. E.J. Trickett led the East Fairmont offense with a 2-for-3 performance that included a run scored and an RBI. Nine of the ten Bees to stroll to the plate finished with a hit in a well-rounded team effort.
2:30 (Myrtle Beach, HS): Nitro 7, East Clarendon (SC) 3
The Wildcats sent freshman Levi Kelly to the mound to make his first start of his high school career and the highly touted righty did not disappoint (see video below). With college coaches from Coastal Carolina, Duke, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and USC-Upstate in attendance, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound righty went six strong innings with 12 strikeouts to earn the win. Junior righty Eddie Flores worked a scoreless 7th inning with three strikeouts of his own in relief.
The Wildcats tied the game 3-3 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an East Clarendon error and promptly added four additional runs to win going away. Senior Kipp Brewer, a West Virginia State recruit, singled to right to give Nitro the lead. Freshman Jason Douglas followed with an RBI single and junior Matt Harrison, a Marshall commit, capped the scoring with a two-run double.
Junior catcher Matt Jewell (3-for-3, RBI) and Flores (2-for-3, RBI) were the hitting stars in the first of three pool play games for the Wildcats. Nitro continues tournament action at 7:00pm Tuesday when they play Myrtle Beach HS on their own home field.
