Millersville University Announces 2014 Early Signing Class

Millersville University, fresh off a 40-18 campaign, has announced its five member early signing class for 2014. This group will look to help continue the recent success that the Marauders program has experienced under the direction of Jon Shehan. Since taking over the program in 2008, Shehan has directed the program to new heights, leading the Marauders to 179 wins. Millersville has achieved three PSAC Eastern Division Championships, a NCAA Atlantic Regional title, two 40-win seasons and two No. 1 seeds in NCAA regional play.

Shehan feels the group of players in this early signing class will help keep the program heading in the right direction. "We have a lot of young pitching right now that, due to an outstanding group of veteran arms over the past few seasons, has not had time to gain experience. Therefore, we decided to go light on recruiting pitching this fall and concentrate on signing a few excellent position players. We currently lack depth up the middle and we feel like we signed two very talented infielders in Ted Williams and Erik Bowren. Aaron Taylor projects as a corner outfielder with arm strength and power potential, while Brian Novak is athletic behind the plate and has the ability to contribute early at the plate. Stephen Muscovitch, the only pitcher in this class, meets our profile for pitching very well. He is a projectable right-hander with a mid-80s fastball and has a good feel for three pitches.

Shehan has been able to turn the Marauders into a perennial contender in the PSAC with hard work and a concerted effort to recruit quality student-athletes. Shehan offers the following advice to underclassmen beginning the recruiting process; "First, as tempting as it might be, do not be enamored with what division a program competes in. There is too much overlap between Division I, II, III and junior college levels. Instead, build a list of quality programs that fit your academic needs, ability level, and that you feel would provide you with a quality experience over a four-year period. Transferring occurs because status plays a major role in the decision making process for many prospects that fail to choose an institution and program based on fit. Lastly, college coaches do not want to hear from parents. We want to hear from the prospects. The prospects should be the ones making the phone calls and placing the emails to gain interest for themselves, not their parents."

Following is a look at the five players that make up the Marauders' early signing class for 2014.


2014 Early commits

SS Erik Bowren (Archbishop Wood HS)

Bowren is a 6-foot, 165-pound middle infielder that was an honorable mention selection to the Philadelphia Daily News All-City Baseball Team in 2013. He was also named to the Philadelphia High School Baseball Coaches' All-Catholic League Blue Division 2nd Team. Bowren is ranked No. 159 in the PA Class of 2014.

RHP Stephen Muscovitch (Owen J. Roberts HS)

Muscovitch is a 6-foot-4, 190-pound righty that sits 84-85 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with very good late life to his fastball. He also commands his 78 mph changeup with arm side run that he throws at near fastball arm speed. Muscovitch uses a mid 70s slider as a quality third pitch and will throw any of his pitches at any count. He has sound mechanics that suggest additional velocity is inevitable with further physical maturity. Muscovitch impressed in the Fall College Prospect Program working three solid innings at Widener University. He struck out four and did not allow a run in his appearance in September. Muscovitch is ranked No. 52 in the PA Class of 2014.

C Brian Novak (Salesianum HS, DE)

Novak is a talented 6-foot-2, 175-pound catcher from Delaware that participated in the North/South All-Star game last spring. He has displayed consistent pop times of 1.95-2.00 with on throws of 75 mph from the crouch. Novak runs a sub-7.0 60-yard dash and led Salesianum in extra base hits and home runs.

OF Aaron Taylor (J.P. McCaskey HS)

Taylor is a 6-foot, 180-pound outfielder that hit .390 with 15 RBI and 24 runs scored in 2013. Of his 30 hits as a junior he had eight doubles, two triples and two home runs. Taylor is ranked No. 104 in the PA Class of 2014.

2B/SS Ted Williams (Meadville Area HS)

Williams is a 5-foot-9, 145-pound middle infielder that has soft hands, quick feet and above average arm strength at 84 mph across the diamond. Williams showcased the ability to be a consistent top of the order hitter in 2013, hitting .500 during his junior season. The left-handed hitter is ranked No. 64 in the PA Class of 2014.
