Middle Infield Analysis: Week 2 of Fall College Prospect Program

A solid group of middle infielders displayed their abilities during the course of the 2nd weekend of the Fall College Prospect Program. Following is a breakdown of the middle infield prospects in attendance at Temple University (8/24) and at Widener University (8/25).

Middle Infielders

2B/SS Justin Forktus, Conwell-Egan HS, Class of 2014

Forktus hits out of a square stance and stays inside the baseball well, using all fields. He showcased a bat exit velocity of 75 mph and went 2-for-3 at the plate in game action at Widener University. Forktus displayed some range defensively and a 70 mph arm across the diamond.

2B/OF Brayden Lackey, Cedar Cliff HS, Class of 2015

Lackey is a 5-foot-9, 155-pound left-handed hitter with some pop. He utilizes a lift and replace stride foot and stays behind the baseball well creating a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. He barreled the baseball routinely during batting practice, leaving the yard once and hitting several other basebalsl to the wall. Lackey showed the ability to play through the baseball in the infield with a quick release and a 70 mph arm across the diamond.

SS/RHP Nick Lorenz, East Juniata HS, Class of 2014

Lorenz is an athletic 6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect that showcased a slightly open stance and good extension to his swing creating a bat exit velocity of 90 mph. He has a flat bat path and hits off a firm back side allowing him to drive the baseball. Lorenz is likely to be a 3B at the next level. He showed good carry across the diamond on throws of 79 mph. 

SS/2B Kevin McGowan, Haverford School, Class of 2015

McGowan is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitter that has some pop. He uses a high hands load and a solid lower half to create barrel whip and a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. McGowan took an impressive round of batting practice at Widener University, hitting two home runs and several other balls to the wall in right. McGowan has a quick release and good feet in the middle infield. He showcased a 77 mph arm across the diamond and the ability to play the baseball on the move.

2B/SS Devon Walker, Dubois HS, Class of 2014

Walker showcased a solid 85 mph bat exit velocity and a very short swing path. He barrels everything in batting practice and utilizes a strong lower half to create some gap power. The 5-foot-9, 160-pound uncommitted senior displayed his athleticism, turning two double plays from 2B. In both cases Walker showed a clean, quick transition and was able to get off strong throws with a runner bearing down on him.

2B/SS Ted Williams, Meadville HS, Class of 2014

Williams showcased the top middle infield arm of the weekend at 82 mph across the diamond. The 5-foot-9, 145-pound Millersville University recruit showcased soft hands and a clean transition in game action, taking part in three double play turns over the two games. The left-handed hitter barreled the baseball consistently to all fields in batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 80 mph.
