Michigan Spotlight Games: Diamond Classic - Grand Ledge vs Portland & Fowlerville vs Lakewood
Grand Ledge beat Portland 5-0 in the second round of the Diamond Classic behind a complete game shutout from 2017 Wyatt Rush.
Rush struck out seven batters in the win, allowing just two hits, and added a RBI at the plate with a fielder’s choice in the top of the first inning.
2018 Austin Allison was on the mound for Portland and kept the Grand Ledge offense in check through the first four innings, as the lone score was Rush’s RBI in the first.
2017 Sam Goodman hit a two run single in the top of the fifth that extend Grand Ledge’s lead to 3-0.
Portland had their best scoring chance of the game in the bottom of the fifth, as 2018 Gavin Dennany led off the inning with a triple, but Rush threw Dennany out at the plate on a suicide squeeze attempt in the next at bat.
2017 Xavier Farr completed the scoring for Grand Ledge in the top of the seventh, driving in a run with a triple before scoring on a passed ball.
With the win, Grand Ledge moves on the the semifinals of the Diamond Classic where they will face the winner of Holt v St. Johns on Monday.
Game Two - Fowlerville v Lakewood
2017 Eric Fritz threw a complete game one hitter as Fowlerville beat Lakewood 9-0 to advance to the Diamond Classic.
Fritz retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced in the game, with the lone base runner coming on a fielding error in the bottom of the fifth, as Fowlerville built a 3-0 lead after five innings.
Fowlerville scored all three runs in the top of the fourth. 2018 Trevor Miller led off the inning with a single and scored on a Lakewood error fielding a bunt. 2019 JT Maybee added a RBI on a fielder’s choice and 2019 Wyatt Daniel drove in a run with a single in the inning.
Fritz continued his dominance on the mound, striking out the first two batters he faced in the sixth, before 2018 Chandler Adams broke up the no hitter with a two out infield single.
Fowlerville broke the game open with six runs in the top of seventh to complete the 9-0 win. Miller drove in a pair of runs with a single, while Daniel added his second RBI of the night with a single.
Fritz finished the game with eight strikeouts and allowed only one walk, which came in the seventh.
The Gladiators will face the winner of DeWitt v Okemos in the semifinals of the Diamond Classic on Monday.
