Michigan Insider: University Liggett Making Immediate Impact in D1

Last season’s Division 3 state champion made an unprecedented move defying the odds and moving to the highest division, Division 1.

Liggett has been a state powerhouse defeating multiple division 1 schools over the years in non-league competition. Liggett has arguably been the state’s best program since 2011. They have played in the state title game every season since 2011, besides one, and won 4 titles in total.

“The season has gone very well! We have played consistent sound baseball offensively and defensively! Our team ERA is 1.24 and we have scored 269 runs and given up only 39 runs. Record as of today is 26-2.” Coach Dan Cimini.

Up the middle (SS,2B, CF) Liggett may be the strongest in the state.

2018 Noah Miller is the top 2B in the state for his class. Smaller in stature but has big time game. Has a great feel for the game and can absolutely swing it at the plate. This season he’s hitting .460 with 33 hits, 10 doubles, 4 home runs and 31 RBIs.

2018 William Morrison was a member of the Team Michigan at the Future Games last summer. The team’s best athlete, possess a variety of tools and can play all over the diamond. Hitting .416, with 41 runs scored, 6 doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs , 20 walks and 31 stolen bases.

2017 Connor McCarron has been one of the state’s elite defenders since his freshman year when he was able to play SS on the eventual state championship team. One question mark about McCarron was his bat, but he’s come out swinging a hot stick with added power. This season he’s hitting .395 with 8 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs and 41 RBIs.

The Knights are not a one man band they get things done by committee with several talented players. Below you will see other key contributors who will certainly be a great help to college programs.

Liggett is currently ranked #2 in our PBR Power 25 rankings, heading into the state playoffs. The Knights  have won 36 of last 38 games dating back to last season, where they won 10 in a row to end last season while also winning their first 16 games this year.

“I am very proud of the work ethic and focus my players have demonstrated throughout this season. EVERYTHING COUNTS in our PROGRAM and the boys have done whatever they can to adhere to that philosophy” stated Coach Cimini.

One thing is for sure Liggett will fight hard and have a winning pedigree. Off to a hot start it will be difficult for anyone to cool them off. Certainly a force to be reckon with whether it’s Division 3 or Division 1.
