New Hampshire Spotlight Game: Spaulding vs Exeter

On Friday night he fourth seeded Spaulding Red Raiders (14-6) took on the top seeded Exeter Blue Hawks (20-0) at Southern New Hampshire University for a spot in the championship game against Bedford.

Early on it looked like it would be a blow out, as Exeter lineup was squaring up everything that Spaulding pitcher Shaun Cormier was throwing at them, and took a 3-0 lead thanks to a bases clearing triple by Ben Malgeri.

Spaulding clawed its way back, but still trailed 4-2 after a home run by Exeter’s Tom Polhemus.

Spaulding scored in the 4th, 5th, and 7th innings to take a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the 7th.

Cormier was still pitching for the Red Raiders, and was able to retire the two best hitters in Exeter’s lineup, Kyle Ball (Stetson commit) and Cody Morissette (Boston College commit).

All of the momentum shifted to Exeter however when they loaded the bases after a double, walk, and single. Cormier then walked in a run and was taken out in favor of Matt White.

Cormier finished with a stat line of 6.2 innings pitched, 7 runs, 9 hits, and 7 strikeouts, and went 1-4 at the plate.

Exeter starting pitcher Bobby Cliche came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, trailing by one. The count ran full and Cliche came through with a base hit to right with the runners going on the pitch, to drive home the tying and winning runs to keep Exeter’s undefeated season alive.

Top Performers

• Cody Morissette (2-3) was impressive at the plate and in the field, showing a strong arm in the infield.
• Keagan Calero and Jonathan Dube hit well for Spaulding and showed good speed.
• Junior Bobby Cliche pitched well for Exeter.
