Maryland Super60 Preview

This Sunday, February 5th marks the 15th annual PBR Super60 Pro Showcase hosted at The Max indoor facility in McCook, IL. Over the last 14 years, the Super 60 has become the most heavily scouted preseason event for potential draft picks. The primary purpose of the Super 60 is to give professional area scouts, cross-checkers and scouting directors a head start to the high school season. The event is for draft-eligible Class of 2017 prospects.

Last year alone had an astounding 120 professional scouts of all levels. Most Major League teams had 3-5 scouts in attendance. Since the event's inception in 2003, more than 250 players have been selected in the MLB Draft (CLICK HERE FOR MORE PLAYER INFO), including 11 first-round picks and 14 second-rounders. Last year alone, five Super 60 participants were drafted in the first round, including the No. 5 pick overall, OF Corey Ray (Class of 2013).

Of the Super 60's long history, last year's collective talent was arguably the best of all-time. Twenty of the 27 pitchers were 90-plus on the mound, including an event-record 96 mph by Brenden Heiss (IL). Several players emerged as high-level draft prospects, which ultimately resulted in SS Gavin Lux (WI) and LHP Joey Wentz (KS) getting drafted in the first round, and C Ben Rortvedt selected in the second round, to name a few.

2017 marks the second year Maryland has eligible players for this event and will feature three from the Old Line State: Harold Cortijo, Randy Bednar, and Brandon Dorsey

Cortijo moved to Maryland a year ago from Puerto Rico and jumped onto the radar this summer, running his fastball up to 89 with a loose, athletic arm to go with two-way potential. He continued to progress this fall and recently sat at 93 and topped out at 94.

2.21.16 - Solid athletic frame at 5-foot-11, 165-pounds. Ran a 6.74 60-yard dash. Hits from an athletic set up with smooth load and leg kick. Has direct swing path to the ball with explosive bat speed. Squared the baseball extremely well during batting practice. Extension through contact with backspin on the ball. Gap-to-gap style hitter with power. Nice lower half involvement. Exit velocity of 94 mph. Throws from a high ¾ arm slot with loose arm action. Clean hands and exchange with active feet. Works thru the ball very well and throws have life on them at 89 mph.

9.26.16 - Uncommitted 2017 Brandon Dorsey had a very nice weekend, showing why he can be a high end offensive player for a program. Dorsey hit the ball hard to all parts of the field with nice rhythm at the plate and quick hands.he shows advanced ability at the plate and continues to develop on the defensive end.
