Maryland State Player of the Year Announced
June 19, 2017
The 2017 high school season yielded many stellar individual performances across all corners of Maryland. But one player stood above the rest:
HAROLD CORTIJO
Cortijo, a senior right-handed pitcher / outfielder from Riverdale Baptist School, delivered a statistically dominant season while helping lead his team to a 30-1 record, ending the season as the No.1 ranked team in the PBR Maryland Private School Power Rankings.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Coritjo went 11-0 for Riverdale Baptist this season with a 0.55 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 63.1 innings pitched. At the plate, Cortijo hit .537 with 53 runs scored, 33 RBI, and 17 stolen bases. Cortijo was committed to Seminole State Junior College (FL) and recently signed with the New York Yankees, who drafted Cortijo in Rd. 14 (Pick 422).
Cortijo's all-around performance has earned him the 2017 Prep Baseball Report Maryland Player of the Year honors.
Cortijo edged out a highly competitive field of candidates, selected by Maryland Scouting Director Jerry Shank and his team of area scouts who covered the season throughout the spring. Player of the Year nominations are provided by high school coaches across the state.
