JUCO programs across the state of Maryland began preseason practices back in early January. As the calendar quickly turns and with several teams getting ready to open up their 2019 campaigns in the next few weeks, we begin our coverage of the Maryland JUCO Conference with a preseason preview of all fourteen schools. In each preview, we will take a look back at the 2018 season, examine key players that have moved on or left the program, look at some new faces and key players for the upcoming season, and finally take a sneak peak at whats ahead for the 2019 season. 2019 Season Snapshot
The back to back defending NJCAA Region XX DIII Champions Prince George's Owls enter 2019 with high expectations. 8th year head coach Buddy Foster really likes his incoming freshman class and feels that combined with returning NJCAA All-Region XX DIII First Teamer Vinny Rotundo, along with Pedro Montero, Anthony Cavalier, Chase Perreault, and Clark Reese; the Owls have a real opportunity to make it to Pioneer Park in Greeneville, Tennessee for the NJCAA D3 World Series. (Prince George's last made their second trip to the NJCAA D3 World Series under Coach Foster in 2017). Sophomore leaders Brandon Crosby and Bay To highlight a solid group from last season that have moved on to four-year schools so new leadership and freshman stepping up will play a critical role in if they are able to achieve that ultimate goal. Aside from the returning sophomores, look for the steady influx of talented newcomers including Gabe Aponte, Sam Boshart, Aaron Cooper, Aderlyn Cubilete, Blake Gatewood, Peyton Harmon, Reilly Hughes, Ryan Mahanand, Trey Newland, Dillon Sullivan, and Jake Willis to get plenty of early opportunities as Foster works to mold this years team and define roles. Long-time rival Montgomery College jumped to DII at the end of the 2018 season leaving Prince George's as the lone Maryland JUCO Conference DIII school. If the Owls can take care of business in the Region XX Tournament again this year, Prince George's will host the District D best of three series against the winner of Region X which includes Danville CC (VA), Rockingham CC (NC), Surry CC (NC), and Thomas Nelson CC (VA).
