2021 Season Snapshot
Look no further than at CCBC Catonsville's roster this season to see the impact Covid-19 is making on JUCO teams returning a wealth of experience. 18th year Head Coach Dan Blue returns ten position players, nine pitchers, and has put together one of the stronger incoming freshman classes in the Maryland JUCO Conference, with several players capable of seeing early playing time. With all of that experience and a loaded incoming freshman class, CCBC Catonsville figures to stand a really good shot of contending for the conference and NJCAA Region XX DII titles this spring.
On the mound, Tyler Green, Travis Weaver, Dan Delaney, and Jason Skeen all return from the Cardinals starting rotation a season ago. Look for Coach Blue to lean on Ausitn Galda and Preston Mauzy as anchors in the bullpen along with fellow returners James Hurst, J.R. Simmons, and Trevor Smoot providing depth when called upon. In addition to the aforementioned stable of experienced returners back on the mound in 2021; freshman Alex Elliott, Julian Fuller, Jimmy Jaecksch, and Tomas Martinez all could see some type of role as well on the mound at some point this year.
Offensively, sophomore Aronne Dutton returns as the spark plug atop the lineup with his tremendous speed and ability to wreck havoc on the bases with Dwayne Thomas, Cesar Castillo-Baez, Nick Carpio, and Sam Rodriguez looking to add pop in the middle of the order. Catcher Tyler Shadle returns as well providing stability behind the dish and also figures to play a key role in the lineup alongside fellow returners in Simmons and Smoot. Of the incoming freshman class, look for Caleb Bailey, Mark Brady, Wyatt Moore, Orlando Perez Jr., Trent Rowland, and the aforementioned two-way players in Elliott, Fuller, Jaecksch, and Martinez to get some opportunities to crack the lineup throughout the year. This year's lineup on paper looks to be as balanced of an offense you will see across the conference.
Like many other Maryland JUCO Conference schools, the Cardinals will also forgo their annual trip down to Florida this year to kick off the season. Instead, CCBC Catonsville will open at home against rival CCBC Essex on March 2nd and grind through 22 games in the opening month against conference and regional perennial powerhouses Harford CC, Chesapeake College, Potomac State (WV), and Northampton (PA) just to name a few. Expect this very tough schedule to really prepare them at making a fourth straight trip to the NJCAA Region XX DII Final Four which they will host come May.
