Division I/Division II Ranked Teams
#1 Moeller (1-0) defeated Ross by a score of 4-2. Senior left-handed pitcher Phillip Diehl (Evansville recruit) started and threw two innings giving up one run while striking out six. Unsigned senior right-handed pitcher Zach Williams finished and got the win striking out four. Senior outfielder Ryan LeFevers doubled in two runs and stole a base. The state’s top junior catcher Cameron Whitehead also doubled.
#2 Mason (1-0) beat Lakota West (0-1) by a score of 9-2. Standout junior right-handed pitcher Andrew McDonald allowed two runs and struck out seven batters while walking four over his five innings of work. Senior right-handed pitcher Zak Farmer (Walsh recruit) took the loss for Lakota West.
#4 Pickerington Central (0-1) fell to Upper Arlington (1-0) in a tight 1-0 game. Upper Arlington senior right-handed pitcher Michael Koltak (Ohio State recruit) picked up the win with six plus innings of work.
#7 Vandalia Butler (1-2) loses to Piqua by a score of 6-5. Andy Draving picked up the win for Piqua with six plus innings of work.
#8 Lakota East fell to Hamilton by a score of 4-2. Lakota East senior left-handed pitcher Michael Conrad (Cincinnati recruit) went 6 innings. He used an 87 mph fastball and 71 mph curveball to keep the Hamilton hitters at bay during his time on the mound. Lakota East jumped out to an early lead behind an Alex Corna (OU recruit) two-run homerun. Senior right-handed pitcher Patrick McGuff threw four innings in relief to pick up the win for Hamilton. Both McGuff, sophomore short-stop John Heckman, and Steven Moore contributed key hits for Hamilton in the win.
#9 Grove City (1-0) defeated Hilliard Davidson (0-1) by a score of 7-1. Senior right-handed pitcher Mitchell Stephens went six scoreless innings while allowing two hits. Sophomore outfielder Tyler Cowles collected two hits, including a triple, and two walks while stealing four bases. Standout junior catcher Drew Nankivell threw out two Davidson runners on the base paths.
#14 Elder (2-1) defeated Lebanon (0-1) by a score of 6-3. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Wes Noble, who is one of the top prospects in the Class of 2014, gave up two earned runs over five innings of work. Offensively, Zach Beckner and Tyler Newman each collected two hits at the plate. Elder’s Mitchell Asmann went 1 for 1 with a walk and hit-by-pitch.
Licking Valley (1-0) knocks off #17 Jonathan Alder (0-1) by a score of 4-1. Valley’s Devin Carr threw a complete game to take down the Pioneers and give first year head coach Adam Arcurri his first win.
#19 Columbus DeSales (3-0) keeps rolling as they knock off Olentangy Lewis Center (0-1) by a score of 3-2 in 11 innings of play.
#21 Dublin Coffman (1-0) made quick work of Reynoldsburg (0-1) in a 10-0 victory. Talented junior left-handed pitcher James Walsh threw a complete game as he shut down the Raider bats.
#25 Amherst (1-0) defeated Bay Village (0-1) by a score of 6-3. Standout junior right-handed pitcher Shawn Reid collected his first win of the season. Amherst junior Griffin Weir and sophomore Justin Mott each added two hits a piece.
Division III/Division IV Ranked Teams
#2 Newark Catholic (0-1) fell to fellow Catholic foe Columbus Bishop Watterson (1-0) with a final score of 13-6. Senior right-handed pitcher Jimmy Lough (OSU recruit) picked up the loss while Watterson's Matt Smolik went five innings as he picked up his first win of the year.
#4 Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (1-0) defeated Turpin (0-1) by a score of 11-5. The game was highlighted by four homeruns. Ted Andrews hit two (Furman recruit), senior Cameron Armstrong, and junior Nick Weaver contributed the others. CHCA collected 12 hits to Turpin’s 3. Matt Blankenship (Indiana Wesleyan recruit) was the winning pitcher with Moorehead (Taylor University) pickuping up the save.
#5 Patrick Henry (1-0) defeated Miller City (0-1) by a score of 9-8.
#7 Bloom Carroll defeated Liberty Union 5-1 in the opener for both teams. Jake Newton got the win for the Bulldogs going 5 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits. Ben Kerr pitched the last 2 innings to get the Save. Ben Kerr broke open a 1-0 close ball game in the 3rd with a 2 out, 2 RBI single. Bloom Carroll added 2 insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th on a 2 RBI single by talented sophomore catcher Jarrett Peters.
#13 Southeastern fell to Springfield Shawnee by a score of 5-2. Springfield Shawnee junior right-handed pitcher Jordan Huggins was the winning pitcher giving up only one unearned run. Junior Drew Young was 3 for 4 for Shawnee. Also junior Tyler Bostick broke a 2 to 2 tie with a single and 2 RBI.
#14 Defiance Tinora (1-0) defeated Liberty Center (0-1) by a score of 11-0. Senior Tyler McKinney threw 5 innings of no hit baseball for the win. Clay Pittman, sophomore catcher, went 3 for 3 at the plate with 4 RBI and 3 stolen bases. Sophomores Reid Renollet and Derek Drew also contributed hits for Tinora.
#15 Piketon (2-1) defeated Northwest by a score of 14-2. Senior right-handed pitcher earned the win while striking out eight batters. Junior standout Zach Farmer collected a double and triple at the plate.
#25 St. Henry fell to Indian Lake (2-0) by a score 3-1. Indian Lake was lead by an impressive performance from unsigned senior right-handed pitcher Zach Maier, who stuck out 9 batters while only allowing 2 hits.
Non-Ranked Team Scores
Westerville Central (1-1) took down Solon in Myrtle Beach by a score of 8-2. The state's top pitcher, Matt Smoral, went head-to-head with Ohio University recruit Connor Seitz. When it was all said and done, Seitz went six innings while Smoral came out after four. The Warhawks also picked up their first loss of the year in an 8-6 loss to Gonzaga Prep out of Washington, D.C.
Olentangy Orange (1-0) beat Lancaster (0-1) by a score of 10-0. Senior right-handed pitcher Luke Wolford (Dayton recruit) pitched a one hitter while striking out nine batters. He also contributed two hits at the plate. Sophomore Cody McCague knocked in three runs with a sac fly and double.
Findlay (1-0) beat Tiffin Columbian (0-1) by a score of 3-1. Junior left-handed pitcher Jim Orwick (Notre Dame recruit) was sharp in his first outing of the year. He allowed one hit while going the distance. At the plate, Orwick also contributed two hits, including a triple.
Canton South defeated Uniontown Lake by a score of 5-3.
Youngstown Boardman defeated Hubbard by a score of 9-1.
Waynesville defeated Blanchester by a score of 10-0. Tyler Schrock was the winning pitcher with a complete game and nine strikeouts. Junior Ty Black went four for four with two doubles, two triples, and 2 RBI.
Lorain defeated Midview by a score of 6-2. Junior left-handed pitcher Adrian Calez picked up the win. Fellow junior Nic Billingsley keyed the offense with two hits. Midview’s Cody Calloway went 2 for 3 at the plate with a walk.
Troy took down Wayne by a score of 2-1. Sophomore Ben Langdon pitched six innings allowing one run and striking out six batters. Nick Antonides contributed a single and a double.
Lexington (1-0) defeated Marion Pleasant (0-1) by a score of 6-3. Lexington was led on the mound by junior pitcher James Watkins who threw 5 innings giving up 2 earned runs. Offensively, juniors Mason Willeke and Logan Bastin and freshman Evan Lee collected two hits. Junior Zach Sterry, sophmore Brody Basilone, Senior Cody Bauer and Watkins added hits for the Minutemen. Freshman Kyle Galyk led pleasant with two hits.
Valley View defeated Eaton 12-10 on a two run walk-off home run by Andrew Zellner.
Northridge beat Bexley by a score of 10-7. Freshman Brad Wilson collected three hits on the day for Northridge.
Zane Trace (1-0) defeated Minford (0-1). Junior Phil Heskett tossed the first 5 innings to pick up the win for Zane Trace against Minford. He scattered 6 hits, one earned run, six strikeouts and walked two. Trent Downs threw the last two innings. Heskett also added two hits and two RBI’s for Zane Trace who had 14 hits on the night.
Thomas Worthington (1-0) picked up a 6-3 win against St. Charles (0-1). Standout sophomore Nick Pauley picked up the win while his battering mate Kegan Lanter went 2 for 4 at the plate with a RBI.
Crestwood (1-0) made short work of Southeast (0-1) by a score of 10-0. It was a pitching duel between Crestwood’s David Brock and Garrett Barrera through 4 innings. Up until that point, Crestwood led 1-0 scoring on a first and third steal. In the 5th Crestwood erupted for 9 runs, which was aided by Southeast committing several errors. Brock went the distance striking out 12 and worked out of a couple jams along the way. Juniors Ryan Fedor and Aaron Jackson both went two for three at the plate with a run and RBI for Crestwood. Southeast senior Garrett Barrera pitched 4.1 innings allowing six runs and striking out eight batters. Junior Nick Dejacimo went two for two at the plate.
Columbus Academy (1-0) beat Columbus Hartley (0-1) by a score of 16-5. Zach Ratcliff (OSU recruit) was the winning pitcher for Academy.
Westfall took down Logan Elm by a score of 11-0. Westfall junior Alek Stonerock pitched a shutout allowing seven hits. Logan Elm’s Anthony Vagnier (Northern Kentucky recruit) went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double.
Chillicothe Unioto (1-0) defeated Hillsboro (0-1) by a score of 12 to 5. Junior left-handed pitcher Bryce Arledge registered 4 innings on the mound and struck out five batters. Infielder Dylan Minney had a 4 for 5 day at the plate with a double and 2 RBI.
Watkins Memorial (1-0) defeated Grove City Christian (0-1) by a score of 12-6.
Niles McKinley (1-0) defeated Jefferson (0-1) in eight innings by a score of 8-7. Niles Juniors Jake Foster, Noah Arvin & Ryan Ifft all had 2 hits and Ifft had three RBI. Jake Foster (1-0) was the winning pitcher in relief for Niles. Brett Powers had two hits and four RBI for Jefferson.
Milford beat Walnut Hills 10-0 in 5 innings. Zach Cook (2013) went 5 scoreless innings of 1-hit ball while striking 9. He also knocked in 3 runs.
Ironton St. Joseph High School beat New Boston Glenwood High School 4-1 at Ironton St. Joseph on Monday. Junior Justin Mahlmeister was the winning pitcher and struck out 17 batters in 6 innings of work without allowing a hit. Mahlmeister was also 1-2 at the plate with a 3-run HR and 2 walks.
Franklin upped its record to 3-0 behind a one hit 17 strikeout performance by junior Travis Lakins in defeating Brookville (0-1) 2-0.
Dayton Carroll (2-0) whipped up on Cincinnati Roger Bacon (0-1) by a score of 10-1.
Xenia (2-1) defeated Chaminade-Julienne 4-2 behind freshman pitcher Trevor Adkins.
Carlisle (3-0) defeated Ft. Recovery 8-0.
Fairfield defeated Colerain by a score of 5-1. Curtis Olvey (Kent State recruit) and Jake Spalvis combined on a six-hitter. Olvey struck out 10 in six innings for the Indians, adding a triple and an RBI at the plate. Casey McWhorter was 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs, and Braden Burdine and Chris Rossi chipped in two hits apiece.
