MOKAN Winter Open Showcase: Catchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas/Missouri held the Kansas Preseason MOKAN Winter Open Showcase at Mac N Seitz Baseball Academy in Kansas City on February 17.  Nearly 80 players in the 2018 to 2020 classes from around the region attended. 

Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. In the days to come, we will break down the showcase position-by-position, starting with the catchers today.  Although some catchers participated in other positions, this is just a break down of the catching performance. Players are listed in alphabetical order according to state.

This group featured seven catchers with sub-two pop times and five catchers with 75 mph-plus positional velo. Three catchers had a 90-plus exit velo.  

Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

KANSAS CATCHERS

Jack Baird, C, Blue Valley Northwest (KS), 2018
Baird has a strong and durable frame, and is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 4.27 home to first and has an exit velo of 74 mph. At the plate, slightly open stance, controlled leg kick, aggressive hands, solid middle of cage contact during hitting evaluations.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.99 and 2.10-seconds, positional velo of 71 mph, wide set up in base, quick transfer, short over the top release, fluid footwork in sync with transfer, mostly accurate throws.

Jake Faust, C, Blue Valley (KS), 2018 
Faust is an athletically built 5-foot-11 189-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas' 2018 class.  He ran a 4.19 home to first and has an 86 mph exit velo. At the plate, open set up with rhythm in hands, in line stride, slight internal rotation to load, quick hands, gap-to-gap approach, hands work inside the ball, short to contact, solid contact during hitting evals.  Behind the plate, high three quarters release, feet work with hands, clean exchange, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 1.99 and 2.07-seconds, 73 mph positional velo.

Nick Modrcin, C, St. James Academy (KS), 2018
Modrcin is a 6-foot-2 195-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 4.56 home to first and has a 91 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic set up, smooth load, strong hands, pull side power, aggressive swing, simple and repeatable mechanics.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.12 and 2.33, 77 mph positional velo, over the top release, momentum though the catch, gets into legs to set up, flexible, mostly accurate throws. 

Beckett Rasmussen, C, Louisburg (KS), 2019 
Rasmussen is a 5-foot-10 165-pound switch-hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.45 home to first and has an exit velo of 78 mph from the right side and a 76 mph exit velo from the left side. At the plate, similar swing from both side, balanced stance, in line stride, hands control the bat, level path, gap-to-gap approach. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.19 and 2.41-seconds, over the top arm slot, clean catch and throw with fluid footwork, sits low to give target, somewhat accurate throws. 

MISSOURI CATCHERS

Sam Beuerlein, C, Park Hill South (MO), 2019
Beuerlein is a 6-foot-1 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.43 home to first and has a 90 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts with a thin base and open stance, slightly closed in stride, middle to pull side contact, flashing pull power.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.95 and 2.15-seconds, 77 mph positional velo, low set up, staggered feet, quick glove to hand transfer, over the top release, soft hands, somewhat accurate throw with carry.

Jakob Bush, C, Lawson (MO), 2019
Bush is a 5-foot-10 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.58 home to first and has a 67 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, slight weight shift into back side, reverse toe touch, in line stride, middle to opposite field contact during hitting evals.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.26 and 2.53-seconds, 65 mph positional velo, fluid catch and throw, high three quarters release, sit low, mostly accurate throws.

Jackson Dixon, C, Park Hill South (MO), 2019
Dixon is a 5-foot-10 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.50 home to first and has an 81 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic set up, leg kick to stride, quick and level path, gap-to-gap approach, solid consistent contact, showed feel for the barrel occasionally under the ball, loose hands.  Behind the plate, quick transfer with fluid footwork, accurate thrower, athletic set up, pop times between 1.99 and 2.04 seconds, 69 mph positional velo.

Ethan Fletchall, C, Liberty North (MO), 2018 
Fletchall is a 5-foot-11 15-pound switch-hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 4.15 home to first and has an exit velo of 78 from the right side and a 70 mph exit velo from the left side. At the plate, balanced set up, reverse toe touch and pause to load from the right side, starts loaded on back side from left side, in line stride, gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times from 2.11 and 2.28-seconds, 72 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, wide base, clean transfer, momentum through the catch, mostly accurate throws.

Daniel Hammond, C, Rockhurst (MO), 2019
Hammond is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.26 home to first and has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth load with hand movement, in line stride, quick and aggressive with, loose hands, consistent solid contact during hitting evals, gap-to-gap.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.03 and 2.16 seconds, 77 mph positional velo, over the top arm slot, thin base, fluid exchange working with footwork, moves well to block, somewhat accurate throws.

Aaron Keast, C, Staley (MO), 2018 
Keast is a physical 6-foot 185-pound switch-hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 4.10 home to first and has an exit velo of 84 from the right side and an 82 mph exit velo from the left side. At the plate from the left side, open stance loaded in back leg, some rotation to load, level path with middle to pull contact, from the right side, more square set up, rocking motion to load, more gap-to-gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.32-seconds, positional velo at 74 mph, over the top release, flexible with low target, quick exchange with fluid footwork, throw to the bag at second base. 

Mason Majors, Staley (MO), 2018
Majors is a 5-foot-10 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 4.72 home to first and has an exit velo of 89 mph. At the plate, athletic set up, rhythm in hands, short in line stride, aggressive and quick bat path, consistent hard middle to pull side contact during batting practice, repeats swing with no wasted movement.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.96 and 2.06- seconds, 78 mph positional velo, quick and loose arm action, flexible, quick catch and throw, hands and feet in sync, mostly accurate throws, some with carry.

Tre Morris, C, Battle (MO), 2018 
Morris is a well-built 5-foot-10 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 4.34 home to first and has an exit velo of 94 mph. At the plate, consistently squared up balls during batting practice mostly to the middle of the field, power potential, tall/open and thin stance, in line stride, aggressive with the ball flying off bat.  Behind the plate, over the top release, quick twitch actions in exchange and feet, throws are mostly accurate with carry, pop times 1.90 to 2.06-seconds, 78 mph positional velo.

Tyler Perry,C, Lee’s Summit (MO), 2019
Perry is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.46 home to first and has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, controlled load with leg lift and some hand load to separate, in line stride, body stays under control during swing, squared up ball late in round gap-to-gap.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.09 and 2.14-seconds, 69 mph positional velo, clean exchange, feet in sync, over the top release, sits high, staggered feet in set up, mostly accurate throws.

Brady Prewitt, C, Raytown South (MO), 2019 
Prewitt is a 5-foot-9 167-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.71 home to first and has an exit velo of 83 mph. At the plate, smooth pre-swing rhythm, open stance, in line stride, quick bat speed, level path, gap-to-gap approach, flashed pull side power, aggressive. Behind the plate, pop times between 1.96 and 2.06-seconds, 72 mph positional velo, over the top release, everything works in sync, quick twitch action in catch and throw, soft hands, mostly accurate throws.
