January 19, 2021
TEAM: Mahoning Valley Scrappers
LOCATION: Niles, OH
VENUE: Eastwood Field
Established in 1999, Mahoning Valley has had 4 million visitors to Eastwood Field and hosts 200 events a year, from Scrappers games to Youngstown State and local high school baseball to concerts and charitable events. The Scrappers were always the New York-Penn League affiliate of Cleveland, about 70 miles away, until becoming a founding member of the MLB Draft League. More than 100 former Scrappers have gone on to play in the big leagues.
“This exciting new venture will allow Scrappers fans the opportunity to see the best current Major League Baseball draft prospects at Eastwood Field,” said Jordan Taylor, vice president and general manager. “The partnership will ensure our community will get the opportunity to watch the future stars of Major League Baseball for years to come."
Active in the community, Mahoning Valley was the recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Club Award for the New York-Penn League, recognized for significant contributions to its community, league and the baseball industry. The Scrappers support the local community through outreach, awareness events, donations and involvement. Tickets and merchandise were donated to more than 375 organizations in 2019. During 2015-2019, the Scrappers were at the top of the league in charitable giving at more than $500,000 each year.
And the work isn’t limited to Eastwood Field. The Scrappers frequently work with local school districts in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania through the Junior Achievement program, annual college fair, School Field Trip Day and by integrating new programs into curriculums. In 2018, the Scrappers worked with several schools to promote the importance of literacy through Scrappy’s Reading Club, which was developed for elementary school students.
