MD/DE Scout Blog: Bethesda-Chevy Chase at Sherwood

Thursday night featured a key 4A matchup as Bethesda-Chevy Chase went on the road and traveled to Sherwood. Two premier and storied programs across the Old Line State that features great coaching and top tier talent put on a show all night long, giving a glimpse of some of the best competition in the state.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase opened up the scoring in the first, led by their Senior leader Beck Urofsky (Cornell), as he unloaded on one for a solo homerun to left-center field to put the Barons on the board. Sherwood answered right back in the bottom of the first, as Senior outfielder Niko Pernie led off with a single and advanced on an error to second base, followed by Junior outfielder Brian Scott (Maryland) singling Pernie home on a rocket single down the line in left. Scott would later score on a wild pitch to plate the Warriors second run of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the second, Pernie would strike again, singling up the middle plating the Warriors third run. In the fifth, the Barons would threaten, as Junior catcher Kyle Tatelbaum led off with a walk, followed by a Jackson Clemens single to right field to put runners on first and second with no outs. The threat was subsided however, as Junior third baseman Ryan Bouma completed a huge 5-3 double play, followed by a groundout to get Sherwood out of the inning. Sherwood's Amari Allen would go the distance, picking up the 3-1 win for the Warriors.

Paul Fine SS / 2B / Bethesda-CC, MD / 2022Got the start for the Barons in their game against an extremely talented and deep Sherwood offense, battling through adversity and keeping the Barons in the game through his four innings of work. Really liked the pace and tempo the wiry righty worked with, throwing from a tough low three-quarter slot with some whippy arm action and moxie. Pounded the zone early and often, showcasing strong feel for the fastball and curveball early on, mixing in a solid late fading changeup later in the outing. The fastball came out of the hand well, mixing to both sides of the plate with feel to the glove side at 82-84, topping out at 85. The breaking ball was thrown with confidence, occasionally backing up on right handed hitters with 12/6 shape at 68-70. The changeup fell off the table with late dive action at 70-71. Competed through four innings of work, giving up two earned runs while striking out four.

Beck Urofsky 3B / RHP / Bethesda-CC, MD / 2022Pitching: Came out of the bullpen for the Barons in the fifth inning and worked two scoreless, giving up no hits and striking out one. Works out of the stretch with a high leg kick into a tall balance point. Creates excellent lower half drive down the bump, mixing speeds well from an over the top slot with quick arm action. The fastball played heavy to the bottom portion of the zone consistently and came out of the hand really well at 88-90, topping out at 91. The breaking ball was thrown with confidence, tunneling well with the fastball and keeping hitters off balance at 77-79. The competitiveness and will to win is what sticks out the most with Urofsky and pairs up extremely well with the raw talent and projectability.
Hitting: Provided the spark to the Barons offense throughout the night, and made a big splash in the first inning as he laced an absolute moonshot to left center field on a hanging breaking ball in the first inning for a solo homerun. The physical Cornell University commit possesses a strong, solid 6-4, 205 pound frame, hitting from a tall, balanced stance with slight bend in the knees. Smooth, quick back load with solid separation in the hands, creating solid torque in the lower half with occasional lift through contact. The hands work quick and explosive, showcasing a strong middle of the field approach with evident pop to the pull side. Finished the night 2-for-2 with a homerun, a walk and an RBI.

Amari Allen LHP / 1B / Sherwood , MD / 2023The story of the night came from the physical uncommitted southpaw out of Sherwood. Got the start for the Warriors in their game against Bethesda-Chevy Chase, pounding the zone early and often with a devastating three pitch mix. Works out of a side-step delivery into a tall balance point, staying synched in the lower half with explosion down the bump. The arm works quick through release, hiding the ball well with shorter arm action out of a tough three-quarter slot. Works into a slight crossbody delivery, showcasing excellent and consistent balance through release into an athletic finish. The fastball exploded out of the hand, playing both sides of the plate effectively with feel to the arm side at 87-90, hitting 91 three times and 92 once in the third inning. The velo held well. Still ranging the fastball into the upper 80’s in the back end innings, striking out the final batter of the night in the seventh with an 89 mph fastball. The breaking ball showed tight, sharp 10/4 shape with consistent hard downward action that played the knees all night long at 74-76. Mixed the changeup occasionally at 80-82, consistently working the pitch to the bottom portion of the zone. One of the more dominating performances we’ve seen this year on the bump, working seven innings of one run ball, giving up just three hits while striking out nine against a tough and deep Barons lineup.

Brian Scott OF / RHP / Sherwood, MD / 2023Really like the aggressiveness and consistent line drive approach produced from the athletic outfielder. Hits from a balanced, crouched stance with rhythm in the hands and some quick twitch through contact. Utilizes quick, whippy barrel action with evident strength to the pull side gap and a strong line drive approach to both gaps and alleys. Creates some lift with a more level path to contact and gets out of the box quickly, showcasing his athleticism in all phases of the game. Finished the game against Bethesda-Chevy Chase 1-for-3 with an RBI single, a run scored and a stolen base.
