SHERMAN OAKS, CA. - With the 2020 Southern California High School baseball season right around the corner, our California staff continues its boots on the ground scouting efforts to bring you the best coverage of the the top programs and players Southern California has to offer.

The Matadores of La Mirada HS travelled to Notre Dame HS to take on the Knights in a highly anticipated preseason matchup.  2020 RHP/OF Jared Jones (La Mirada HS), a University of Texas signee, toed the rubber in his third outing of the fall in front of a slew of  MLB scouts, and an energized crowd of onlookers that wanted to get a peek of PBR’s #1 ranked pitcher in the State of California. 

There was plenty to gawk at with Jones, but this matchup of two powerhouse SoCal programs featured so much talent on the field at one time, that it would make your head spin trying to follow everyone. Head coaches Jimmy Zurn (La Mirada HS) and Tom Dill (Notre Dame HS) boast lineups that could literally compete with some college programs right now and give them a run for their money. Both squads not only are really good, their really young and look forward to what the future brings. 

Lets take a closer look at some of the standout players and some other notables to follow.

+ 2020 RHP/OF Jared Jones (La Mirada HS) completely shut down throwing off a mound for a lengthy period of time after the summer circuit, making us question if he was healthy coming into the 2020 season. We all saw him pitch in high leverage, high pressure situations deep into the summer of 2019. Fast forward to January 2020…..If there were any questions regarding his health; he has answered those questions with an exclamation point, He IS healthy, looking fit, physical, and ready to go. Jones has come out firing on all cylinders in his three outings this preseason. On this day Jones threw three and one-third innings sitting 94-97, hitting 98 and 99 MPH one time. It looked easy, and under control. Changeup sat 89-90 (unfair to hitters), and the slider had good tilt at 82-84.  In order to prove to MLB organizations he’s deserving of a high draft pick, he will have to improve his command of his secondary pitches and consistently throw them for strikes. Don’t sleep on the bat either, this five-star recruit is instant-offense. He will hit at the top of the order all year and will be counted on to produce offensively for Zurn and the Mats. 

 

+ 2020 3B Diego Baqueiro (Notre Dame HS) was one of the standouts on the day making the scouts pay close attention as well. If he wasn’t on their radar, he is now. The Loyola Marymount University signee has a large, projectable, athletic frame with significant room to add weight and muscle. A prototypical third baseman that has the bat and defensive capabilities to stay at the hot corner for a long time. LMU has a good one hear. Check out Baqueiro robbing Jones of extra bases and finishing the play like a pro.

+ 2020 UTL Jacob Sharp (La Mirada HS) was a force to be reckoned with from the get-go. The University of Hawaii signee brings an infectious energy that rubs off on his team mates. He’s a doubles machine that will hit in the middle of a stacked La Mirada lineup. Sharp is growing into his frame and should produce more power numbers as he matures.  Here he is making an impact; Sharp destroyed balls all day.
